Hello everyone,

I recently built my first system, and happened to choose the D975XBX2 motherboard. After updating the BIOS to 2809, and installing drivers for the chipset and the rest of my components, I attempted to shut down my computer. All that happens is the two SATA hard drives spin down and presumably power off, while the motherboard and fans remain on. Anyone else encounter this problem? Any ideas on how to go about tackling this problem? So far, Intel has not been any help.

In BIOS, you have to set suspend mode to S3.
(It sounds like you have it set to S1)
In S3 mode, there are problems with the Marvell chipset waking up after suspend, so Intel defaults to S1.

Unfortunately, both S1 and S3 have the same problem. I probably should have mentioned this, but I have disabled the Marvell controller as it proved to be... unstable.

I have this problem on a Dell that I have.
I think when I installed the OS, it was on S1, so after changing the BIOS to S3, the "installation" was somehow stuck on S1.
To workaround this problem without reinstalling, I put the follow batch/script file in startup:

dumppo admin minsleep=s3
exit

I don't remember if I had to download the dumppo.exe program or if it was part of the OS.

The dumppo solution doesn't appear to work for me. Thanks for your time though.

is it possible you have a device connected that is preventing S3 suspend mode?

I suspected this, so I went ahead and disabled "Wake from standby" for both my mouse and keyboard. No progress.

This is a bit tedious, but you need to go through each device in Device Manager and see what the power saving modes supported are.

The only devices under Device Manager that had a Power Management tab were the Mouse, Keyboard, and USB Root Hub (x 5).

USB: Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power.
Mouse & Keyboard: Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby.

I unchecked each one, to no avail.

I forgot to mention that I'm using a MIcrosoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 and a Logitech G5 mouse with the latest version of IntelliType Pro and SetPoint.

What does DUMPPO ADMIN return on the command line for Min Sleep State?

Also, what I'm referring to in Device Manager is as follows:
Device Manager -> (Device) ->Details tab ->Property
Look at Power Capabilities and Power State Mapping in the drop down listbox.

You should see
PDCAP_D3_SUPPORTED For Power Capabilities.
S3->D3 for Power State Mapping for each device, and

just to be clear,
are you saying that this used to work, then after your BIOS update it didn't work?
Did you try going back to an older BIOS revision?

Actually, the first thing I did after getting all the hardware in place was to flash the BIOS to 2809. So yes, 2809 is the only version I have been using. Where might I find an older version, that might work better?

I mistakenly thought it previously worked, then after you flashed, it stopped, but if you've never tried it with older bios, I wouldn't start now.

1) does your system appear to go into standby?
2) did all of your devices show D3/S3 capability
3) what does "DUMPPO cap" say (do a copy/paste)

I'm suspecting your power supply.

My system does appear to go into standby. It can not, however, come out of it.
All my devices showed D3/S3 capability.

It should work. If you get a chance to try another power supply, do that.
Let me think about this one for a couple of days.

Please, take all the time you need, and thanks for the time you already contributed.

Do you have a pinout for your power supply? I want to know if it has the proper 5V standby line to the motherboard. Does it have Pin9 (usually purple I think). it's supposed to be 5V all the way through, unless AC is unplugged, but I'm wondering if it doesn't have that line, does the motherboard just keep the power supply on?

Also, are the fans that stay on connected to your motherboard or are they connected directly to the power supply.
If connected to the motherboard, are the drive power connectors hot during standby?
Finally, does your power supply fans turn off?

It's possible it's not a power supply problem, but I just wanted to rule that out.
