Motherboard and CPU compatibility

I was looking into upgrading my cpu on my computer and found that my motherboard is a MSI P6N SLI Platinum LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard. The specifications are as follows:

Supported CPU
CPU Socket : Type LGA 775
CPU Type : Quad-core / Core 2 Extreme / Core 2 Duo / Pentium
FSB : 1333/1066MHz
Supported CPU Technologies : Hyper-Threading Technology

I found a cpu that was very affordable and fast. It is a Intel Pentium D 935 Presler 3.2GHz 2 x 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Dual-Core Processor. Its specs are:

Tech Spec
Multi-Core : Dual-Core
Name : Pentium D 935
Operating Frequency : 3.2GHz
FSB : 800MHz
L2 Cache : 2 x 2MB
Manufacturing Tech : 65 nm

I was curious if it were possible that these two were compatible even with the FSB being different. If they were compatible would the cpu run at a slower pace?

Since you do have an MSI MOBO, check out their website for available and compatible CPU processors. The site will go to great details mentioning what will work with a certain board and what will not within a given CPU processor family.


The MSI MOBO in my signature has a very detailed memory and CPU compatibility chart over there too.

i'd highly, HIGHLY recommend looking into the Core2Duo series of processors. more energy efficient, faster, and they run much cooler than the Pentiums do.

what is your price range also, and what do you intend to use your chip for most of the time (games, office work, video encoding, rendering, etc...)
like Stev said, you should check out the MSI website and look up your particular motherboard model for compatibility specs just so you get to know your board a bit better

if you only need a pentium then by all means get a pentium, but i have to say your motherboard is a good one, look at your options for the LGA 775 socket.

Turns out that cpu is sold out on zip zoom fly and new egg anyways. I'm looking to use my computer mainly for Age of Conan. I've never been much of a gamer, but the nerd inside me wants to dish out loads of money just to play that game. I'm looking to spend less than 200 dollars for a cpu and I think I'm looking to go with INTEL Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz FSB1333MHz 4M LGA775 now. If you have any other recommendations they'd be greatly apreciated!

To run Age of Conan my computer is looking to have these components in it now:
