New Build Help, if you please? Thank you. =)

Greetings!

New to the forums here and searching for help.

I recently did a bit of shopping and picked up the components for a new build. I haven't put a machine together from scratch in a little over five years and am hoping there's something dumb I should know but am overlooking. The components I've selected are as follows:

Intel D975XBX2 Motherboard (OEM)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 LGA775 processor (2.4 GHz, 8M L2 Cache, 1066 FSB)
Thermaltake Toughpower 850w power supply
EVGA Ge-Force 8800 GTX Video card
No sound as of yet
USB Corded boring mouse and keyboard

The problem I'm having is that the motherboard powers on, monitor works, keyboard works, mouse works, but it shuts down maybe a minute, often less, from the time I've started it.

As with every other build I've ever done, I'm assembling these basic components on my worktop, outside a case just to make sure all the stuff works. Either I'm being a real bonehead, or stuff isn't working.

The manual suggests that it is an overheating issue, but since the computer room here is in the high 60's and the fan for the processor appears to be working satisfactorily, this seems unlikely.

I tried contacting Intel, but their take is that I purchase the board OEM so it's my bag.

Anyone have a suggestion as to what I might try? Thank you very much in advance for your help. =)

Just a quick thought.... You say you have a minute or so before it shuts down. So, next time you fire up the rig, go immediately into bios and check the temps. That will tell you if you do have a temperature problem. If the CPU temp climbs really fast, you may not have gotten the Heat Sink hung up and not making good contact. At least that would be a place to start.

Good Luck!

I agree, it sure sounds like the heatsink isn't making good contact, causing it to overheat real fast and shut down automatically.

Is it a stock HSFan? If so, make sure the legs are securely locked in the 4 openings. Mine took quite a bit of pressure to mount correctly. Make sure the arrows point the right way as they only go in correctly one way. The screwdriver notches should be pointed directly toward the heat sink.

did you use the stock hsfan and thermal paste? could be that it wasn't applied correctly.

Does it run if you enter BIOS and stay there? Or is it only if you enter the OS that it shuts down after a minute or less?

If it is indeed a thermal trip, the bios should tell you with loud siren and the message "PROCESSOR_THERMAL_TRIP_ERROR"

Have you made sure to plug in the 12v to the motherboard from the PSU? It's just beside the CPU 2x4. Page 69 of the manual. And If you need to, the PCIe power connector 1x4.
