Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Does anyone know why when i try overclocking my E6850 on this board that it freezes (well crashes) when i get it to a certain point??!?!
I would really like to be able to OC this beast seeing's though my max temp is about 46oC core the CPU and Cores are at about 52oC
Thanks

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
What point would that be?
And have you tried adding extra voltage to all the likely culprits? (mem, CPU core, NB/MCH etc).

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
How much of an overclock are you going for? Show some bios screens so we can get an idea of where you are.
The most likely cause is that you continue to increase the fsb without thoroughly testing for stability. By the time the board fails to post the overclock is long past stable. Try running at least an hour of Prime95 in between increases. My E6850 is stable up to 3.4Ghz with no voltage increase. To get it to 3.6Ghz, I had to increase vcore to 1.35v.
You also have to keep an eye on what the ram is doing as you increase the fsb, especially if you have it set to auto.

If i set it to 3.1Ghz in the bios it will boot but as soon as i stress test it crashes. I would like to have it at 3.2Ghz if possible
Here you go too

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Take your memory divider down a setting, stress test, if that fails:
and add a tiny amount of voltage to the NB, stress test, if that fails:
add a tiny amount of voltage to the CPU, stress test, if that fails:
Add a chunk of voltage to the CPU and NB, stress test. That should make it stable.
Then Lower the voltage a notch at a time till it becomes unstable again, then put it back up so it is at the lowest stable voltage setting then increase the FSB until it becomes unstable again.
When you are done with the FSB/CPU try putting your memory divider back up and if it fails the test add some more memory voltage, if that doesn't do it, try a bit more NB voltage.
If neither of those do it, your memory can't clock that high. Either give up, or go back to starting memory/NB voltages and loosen the timings and try again.

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Interesting. I have never heard of an E6850 that would not run stable at 3.1Ghz using stock voltage.
Do you not have Go stepping? Either way, you must either be real unlucky with the die size, or there are some other bios settings that are incorrect, or the chip has been overclocked too high, too long, and is now refusing to do it anymore.
Thanks for the pic...unfortunately, I am having difficulty loading the larger pic from imageshack, so I'll have to get back to you on that.
I am curious what your motherboard sets everything to at stock. For now, I would underclock the ram so you know that isn't your issue.
Typically at stock settings (default), the motherboard will slightly overvolt the cpu to make sure its stable (mine does). My chip will run at stock speed 3Ghz and undervolted to 1.15v stable, but my motherboard sets it to 1.25v stock and increases it automatically to 1.35v @ 3.4Ghz. So thats why I never use "auto" cpu voltage settings.

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Ok sorry about that photo its an older one i have set the memory Divider so that the memory runs at what it was made to run at 667Mhz, although i have stress tested it before on that for a night and it worked A okay. And secondly ive never overclocked this CPU ive attempted to get it to run at 3.1Ghz but never succeeded.

In that case run your memory at 533Mhz and try all the things I said.

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Another update, I have set the FSB to 345 X 9 = 3.1Ghz (actually 3.105)
but when i try to get it to anything like 347 or 350 it posts but my sata Hard drives are 'their' They just down show up...
The PCI multiplier is locked at 33Mhz as the Eastune 5 reports, so i think that, that is locked.
I ran a quick stabiliy test with it at 3.1Ghz

Reset your CMOS.

By North Bridge Voltage how would i inscrease it? Which one do i add the voltage too?

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
the FSB overvoltage thing.
Its the whole reason you are struggling with getting your E6850 any higher, because the board is overclocked to 333Mhz FSB from 266Mhz to start with, so it needs more NB (FSB) juice to get much past the 333Mhz.

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Well it gives me four options in the FSB over voltage
Normal
+0.1
+0.2
+0.3
I took it up to 0.1, posts like normal but no Sata drives, i went to 0.2 and the same, How safe is it to take it to 0.3?

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
If you haven't already, you will probably have to completely clear the cmos and reset BIOS settings to get the SATA drives back.
For some reason my board loses the secondary sata drive controller (and the drive attached) when I do some weird combination of things, and I have to reset the cmos and start again.

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Dan is right as usual. Your motherboard is holding you back on overclocking your CPU. I had a few "duh" moments during this thread, but I'm up to speed now.

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Ok this may seem stupid, But after i have set the voltage and my Drives disappear, when i set the FSB back down they come back, Why would i want to After setting the voltage and the FSB would i honestly wipe it all just to get the drives back when i can do it by lowering the FSB? wouldn't that just Wipe clean all the stuff i had just done?

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Well in that case just leave it at your 3.1Ghz clock.
I meant clear it and then try putting all the settings back in, but if it works fine at a lower FSB, there is something not liking the high clocks in your system, and if addding volts isn't curing it then I don't know what else it would be.

Re: Gigabyte GA-945GCM S2L
Hi
I think the sata drives und the memory are your problems,
freezes are often signs of memory problems and I often heared about problems with sata drives at high fsb.
Do you have a ide harddisk for testing, if the sata is your problem?
And put your memory divider at the lowest and look eg in everrest if the freqenzy is lower now and/or try to get/lent a 800mhz memory for testing.
And for testing, if the processor is your problem you should put the multiplier at 6 or 7 and try to increase the fsb.
sorry for mistakes
