With the recent price dip on the Q6600, I took the plunge and bought one. I finished swapping it in a few hours ago. My issue is that all of the utilities I use to check the CPU temp return a negative number. Utilities that read the core temps seem reasonable. As I type this, I'm running 4 copies of mprime and the CPU says -45C, and the four cores show 50,45,50, and 47C.

Now I wouldn't care particularly, but the automatic fan speed control is confused by this apparently as it never boosts the fan speeds. Previously I had used IDCC to set the thresholds for speeding up the fans as the temps increased. I suppose I might could have the fans speedup as the CPU temp approaches 0C!

At the moment, I've disabled fan control and they're all running full tilt. The board has the latest BIOS at this time (2813).

Any suggestions?

I have the same problem on my asus maximus formula while using speedfan . What board are you using?

I'm using the Intel D975XBX2.

Some Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad processor-based Intel Desktop Boards are configured
to support thermal control circuit (TCC). When Intel Desktop Control Center
is used with these boards, the label for the processor temperature is CPU TCC.
The value displayed under CPU TCC is a relative temperature value that indicates
the number of degrees before the TCC is activated. As the value decreases, the
TCC enables processor protection mechanisms that include increasing the processor and
system fan speeds.

I believe that's what I'm seeing. As the "CPU" temperature heads towards zero (the absolute value decrease), the fans kick in more. It's a startling change after having seen it display a temperature for more than a year.

speedfan is buggy with quads for somereason, when i tryed to use it it would jump between -50 and 200 degrees c. but since i was using it to control my cpu fan it sounded pretty funny cause it was spazzing out like noones business

Is your quad cooling the rest of the computer? That's awesome! I am most likely getting a Q6600, and I will see if I get this bug as well.
