Why Does Red Light Come on and THEN no Video???

Hey guys,

I have a D975XBX2 mb and I just put it together (my first daw) with the Q6600 processor and a Big Typhoon to cool it. When I boot up everything seems to be fine.

Then all of a sudden the red light comes on the mb and I loose my video. Actually, I get a blue screen (blank) with like some static type lines.

Could it be something with the Chassis Intrusion? I checked the BIOS and it says that's Disabled so... not sure what to do now. :-k

Any tips?

Thanks,
Jamie

i know for a fact on most motherboard the red light usually means that the cpu is overheating, try to reseat the heatsink and make sure there is contact between the cpu and cooler

What does the temperature of the CPU say in the BIOS?

How far into loading does the board get? I presume it finishes post as you can get in the BIOS?

You should try booting to the "ultimate Boot CD" and see if you can run some tests on that (like memtest86+)

Thanks ViPeR.Ja and Dan!

I believe it's the CPU light. I'll re-adjust the heat sink and see also what the temp is in the bios.

I may have a bit too much coolant grease (I tend to over do stuff). I use the TUNIQ TX-2.

I'll keep you posted how it goes.

Thanks again for your help,
Jamie

Just a line down the middle of the CPU (about as thick as a grain of rice) should be sufficient, the pressure from the heatsink will spread it out.

Thanks Dan!

I just cleaned off all the extra grease. MAN... it was all over the cpu and the cooler! #-o

I took on the cpu chip and clean it off (all over the edges.) I hope it's works ok... I had my anti-static wrist ban on but here in Florida, it's so humid I probably don't even need it.

Going to put it together now... I'll keep you posted.

Well I'm back!

Did just what you said Dan... Put a small amount right down the middle of the CPU. Put the Big Typhoon on.... fired her up... and still get the red light.

However, I also get a "No hard drive detected" so I checked all my connections to the HD and still nothing.

The good news is when I go into the BIOS it does show the Q6600 and the memory so the board is reading the cpu (thank God).

I COULD throw another drive in it... see if it sees it and reload windows, but that still doesn't account on WHY I get the red light. :-k

Just grabbed a bite. Now off to see what the temp says in the BIOS.

OK... Here are the temps.

Processors Thermal Margin 50 C

Internal Temp 34 C

Blowing cool are out the top and back.

Well they seem fine. So it shouldn't be an overheating thing.

Have you tried booting from a CD of some kind? (like a Linux LiveCD or DOS based disk)

Thanks for the reply Dan! :)

I haven't tried booting off a cd or anything. Don't have the Linux LiveCD or a DOS based disk.

What about my XP 64 bit cd... can I boot off of that?

I just wonder why in the heck it doesn't see the drive. In the BIOS is shows the drive (hmmm).

Doesn't hurt to see if it will work.
