What Motherboard do i need?

Ok here's me problem. I had a friend build me a computer as i don't know very much about building one. I moved from my old location and no longer have contact with him. Just as soon as it was built i've had the same problem which is the computer will just reboot itself at random(mostly when i watch videos or try to play a game).
I took it into geeksquad and they told me it was my Operating system. Had Windows XP but now I have Windows Vista Home Premier. It turns out that i'm having the same problem. They've ran a hardware diagnostic and it seems nothing is wrong with any of my memory or whatever else they look at. They also wiped my hard drive and everything so i know its not a virus. Now they are saying that they think the motherboard is malfuntioning, keyword "think".The computer is fairly new. Built in June 08 but has only been used about 5 or 6 times due to the problem. I just wanna be able to to play the newer games and watch movies and surf the net.
All in all, i just want to know whats a good motherboard to get for my setup. I'm being told to get an ASUS but don't know which type to get and if it will even be compatible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
