I am looking at building another computer using an i7 860 processor (socket 1156) and i am in two minds wether to go for an Asus - P7P55D-E or a Gigabyte GA-P55A - UD4.

The more i read about each board the more confusing it gets.

My last computer i built back in 2007 was built using a Gigabyte board and the board died about 2 years latter so i now have some reservations with these boards.

I have been told that Gigabyte have improved their products over the years by using better quality capacitors.

I am confused. Any help would be appreciated.

I am not into gaming or over clocking.

both are great brands, have reliable parts and solid customer support(i recently RMA'd a videocard from ASUS), i can't really steer you one way or the other aside from saying get which one has better features for your intended use

Can't go wrong with either. I know you will like your cpu, I sure do. I second what skier said.

I third that motion. You cannot go wrong with either brand. I use Gigabyte and Asus exclusively and have never had issue with either.

My last 2 builds have been Gigabyte (a P45 UD4P and a P55A UD4P). For friends I have been using ASUS (with integrated video)... as others have mentioned both are good brands. On my last build I decided on the P55A UD4P mainly because of the Realtek ALC889 sound chip which I have read is better than that being used by ASUS (Via chip). In addition to playing games, I listen to music all the time and watch lots of video on my PC so good integrated audio is important to me. Other things I liked about the Gigabyte: 2 eSATA ports and USB 3.0 support.

I've owned great performing boards from both companies! I prefer ASUS only because of their BIOS options, but I'm running a Gigabyte-based system right now and they're a great choice, make sure you invest in a decent offering from either company and keep it and its CPU well cooled to ensure the best protection on the investment!

Lasting and aging do not make an investment. An investment is something that you buy and then (try to) sell at above cost...

Wow, maybe you shouldn't take things so literally. I knew exactly what he was saying.

We all know that PC's are a money pit, but the better care you take of it, the less you will lose when you sell it.

Maybe. Sorry if I have offended you. Just that selling a computer will never make a profit after you've used it. I wasn't being totally serious, for the record, just a bit of a joke. I wasn't trying to say that Stop was wrong, just his wording was slightly incorrect. Sorry I'm a bit anal on grammar.

An investment is also something you buy then use to make money off. In my case I develop software for a living so all my computers are investments. If I did not invest in them I would not be able to keep on learning new stuff.

Yes, my workspace is not particularly clean, but you should see my desktop nowadays: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1 ... 0124669452 Not actually a printscreen of my desktop, but that's how it looks. Just in case you were wondering how I do anything on a computer with nothing on it, I use Objectdock and hide the Start bar... Besides, you weren't supposed to be looking at my desk! I will clean it up today anyway...
*EDIT* FIXED! CLEANED UP MY DESK, BUT THE WIRING BEHIND MY PC COULD TAKE YEARS TO DE-TANGLE!

Besides, I look at the monitor, and my feet don't go past the pedals, so the clutter down the bottom is irrelevant. I do have some cable tidy stuff down there, but what with taking it to LANs and cleaning and fixing my wiring, stuff doesn't stay plugged in or in the same place for long...

It was all in fun. After showing my wife this post, now she wants me to spend the day cleaning and hiding cables.
