Need abit of help please if you can......

My dad's just bought
Asus P5GPL-X motherboard
Pentium 4 650 ( 3.40ghz, 800mhz fsb, 2mb l2 cache )
Msi NX6600LE pci express
1xgig of samsung ddr400
550 PSU
We've added this to his original case and msi dvd/cd rewriter
Hes gonna get a sata harddrive in the future, when his piggy bank is full again !
Question is i cant get an operating sytem to install on the primary ide channel, were using a seagate barracuda 120gig harddrive. "not sata"
It only has one ide channel on the board but 4 Sata connecter's 2 masters and 2 slaves
Can we install a operating system on a non sata harddrive ?
I've been messing with bios settings all weekened to try and get it to work
It just keeps freezing and i have to press reset ?
My thoughts were
Bios update ? support for that cpu ?
Something to do with it being pci express ?
I even installed XP on my machine with that hardrive and then tried it in my dad's machine that dont work either as i get a blue screen error !
