I am thinking of upgrading the CPU on my Intel D975XBX2 MOBO from the Intel Core 2 Duo E6400. Would like recommendations for the best trade-off between value and performance for the LGA775 socket. Also, will I be limited to CPUs with a 1066 MHz system bus? Thanks for your input!

Your best buy would be either a Q6600 or Q6700 but I had a hard time finding them at a fair price on line. Looks like retailers who have them are charging a premiun since they are discontinued.

Just curious why do you want to upgrade your CPU? Have you started using an application that you deem is too slow on your current setup?

Be sure you update your BIOS to the most current revision before you drop in a new CPU. Save yourself some grief if your current BIOS doesn't support the new chip.

You are 2 generations behind now and I don't think moving up in that generation is worth the money. I'd suggest just living with what you have now until you can save up around $400 and then get a Core i5 2400, a new mobo, and 8gb of ram.

Thanks to everyone for their input. You have convinced me this is not a worthwhile endeavor. I could use a bit more speed processing video, and just picked up a bargain on a new video card and thought I would look at the CPU as well. The prices of the Q6600 and Q6700 make it less interesting though for an ageing system.

For the price you'd pay for the Q6600 or Q6700 you would be better off buying a AM3 Phenom X4 and motherboard for less. If you look around supposedly Gigabyte is making AM3+ compatible boards that are ready for the up coming Bulldozer line of processors. This way once the Bulldozer line comes out and you want a new CPU you can pull the old one and pop in a new one. Just a thought.
