d975xbx2, nvidia 9300gs, won't insatall windows 7 64
I have a intell d975xbx2 running XP 32bit, and a e6600 cpu running find for years. fast and stable. i dropped in an q6600 cpu and other than the case fan running at full speed most of the time it has worked fine for weeks. i thought that if i installed win7 64 i could use all of RAM i have rather than the 3.25gb of RAM that XP sees. WELL...
i have nothing but problems trying to install win7 64.... i got it to intall once and while d/l windows updates it got the BSOD and i did a restore to before i d/l the updates but it took 15 minutes to reboot thereafter, if it rebooted at all.
i think it might be the nvidia graphics card?? does anyone know of a good card that works with this MB and win64?
i had to go into the BIOs numerous time to make the hard drive be the one to boot from as it kept reverting to the optical drive even when the install was complete but that worked a few times and then back to 15 minutes boot times. now it won't boot at all...
when it statted the win7 install i removed the xp drive and installed a new WD drive and formatted when i installed win7 64 so it wasn't a update but a clean install...
any ideas??
Thanks

Look for a new BIOS for your board.

According to Intel's website your processor isn't in the supported CPU list. Maybe the BIOS update would fix the issue. If not it sounds (from what I've read) that your board is limited to CPUs with a 1066MHz front side bus. From my recollection the Q9xx0 series of processors are all 1333MHz front side bus.

my bad. i have the Q6700 CPU. is that supported on the d975xbx2? why did it run fine with XP 32 and now not with win7 64?

Update your BIOS regardless. There are a ton of revisions and looking at the list of fixes is mostly to fix issues and add stability. Update the BIOS and see if that helps. The other options here would be your current power supply is under powered for the quad core processor. The RAM you are using is "bad" and Windows 7 is showing you that fault by BSODing.
Intel has a nice utility to scan your computer and tell you if you need an update or not.

the only BIOS updates that i can find all have to do with RAID but right now i can't even get past a black screen with 94 at the lower right corner... i starts to install windows and once it reboots it stops at that screen and won't go past it

Re: d975xbx2, nvidia 9300gs, won't insatall windows 7 64
can I put my XP drive back in and boot from it and if things go normally as they did with that drive, put the new in as a second drive and install 7 64 bit to it and then unhook the XP drive and see if i can boot and run from the 7 64 bit drive?

Should be able to do that. I've had in the past a drive with XP, one with Vista (this was a while back) and another with Ubuntu. So yeah that should work. Just tell the motherboard in the BIOS which hard drive to boot to first.

Re: d975xbx2, nvidia 9300gs, won't insatall windows 7 64
it was the nvidia driver that was downloaded from the Windows Update site itself that caused the BSOD and all the trouble after that. i reinstalled win7 64 and DID NOT download and install that driver again and all is well...
so that begs the question:
what is a good and compatable video card for this MB and Q6700 CPU? this MB has been out long enough to know what is a good one... i do video editing with Adobe Premiere Elements 3 & 10.

Any card really. Give us a price range. And yeah, if you can avoid it find the drivers from the manufacturer's website if you can. If you can't then let Windows see if it can find it.

That will work fine. Assuming your current power supply is up to the task.
