A few months ago my fx 5200 graphic card fried due to a faulty fan. Then a little later my mobo just stopped working, unlucky for me both were over the warrenty date.

So now all i have left is:

-Intel P4 2.4(socket 478)
-Geforce 7600 GT

So can anyone recommend me some good mainboards, or should i just get a new processor, if so which processor do u recommend and what board should i get to go with it(i don't mind if its amd or intel).

Also I only have $200 left to spend.

Now would have been a nice time for you to upgrade, but due to your budget, it looks like you'll have to stick with a skt 478 mobo, because AM2 or 775 will require DDR2, unless someone can get you a DDR1 AMD setup for under that much.

That's a great find Dan!
The Asus board would be a better choice......but neither will overclock

linkinparkks --> If you want to keep that P4 chip I would sugggest trying to get a second hand board with the Intel 865 or 875 Chipset. I done a quick search and can't find any for retail. IF you could find one you could overclock that P4 to ~3.4HGz --> But that AMD setup Dan linked to would still be a better choice IMO
Also you would still have cash left from your $200 budget.........use that to add more Ram!!!!

wow, cool deal , but are the mainboards that are offered good, don't really have good experiences with free stuff..

The board that broke was an Asus P4s800, and my graphic card was a fx 5200 agp version, after these two components broke i took out the cpu, hdd, and disk drives. I just left them around as spares, but this week my bro wanted me to build him a gaming rig which is able to play most games on medium, so i went out a bought a Geforce 7600 GT.

I think i'll buying a new box anyway so i not so worried about the power supply.

At the moment these are the components i already have:

- Geforce 7600 GT <---PCI-e
- P4 2.4 (socket 478)
- Samsung DVD/RW
- Seagate 250GB

I would like the new rig to have at least:

- a ddr2 ram (since he's using it for games)
- a mobo which would allow me to overclock and also one which would support pci-e for my Geforce 7600GT

My alocated budget is now $ 300, this is only for the cpu and the mobo.

I think i would like to trade in my cpu and get a Intel Core 2 Duo E6300

so now i would have about $120 for a mobo, know of any good ones for around that price.( its ok if its a bit over budget)

someone recommended me the Gigabyte GA-965P-S3
know of any other boards which would work with a C2D cpu and would overclock well on a budget.

If you're on a budget, you could always upgrade to a Pentium D.

You should be able to pick up a Processor and Board for roughly about $250.00. The Pentium D's are Dual-Core and 64bit, so not a bad price at all for them.

Or, you can go with the Core 2 Duo's. A 1.83Ghz C2D on NewEgg is $183, and you should be able to pick up a nice board for ~100.

That GigaByte Board doesn't look bad to me.

S3 is really your only choice for C2D for 120ish dollars. Next closest is the Abit AB9 for 130ish http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813127005.

But let me sell you on the C2D. I went from a 930 (Pentium D) to an E6400 and there was a noticeable at stock from the 930. It flew in everything I threw at it, ran worlds cooler, and overclocked like a beast. If the ambients weren't upwards of 85F all the time in this dorm room, I would have this clocked to at least 3.6 Of course I'm on water, but that's beside the point.

But too bad this time this rig is for my bro and he's on a budget.
But i'll still try to get a C2d.
