which board for overclocking - with video?

Post by KnightRid »

Ok, I was looking at this MB - Gigabye GA-965P-DS3 - but i do not have a PCI-E video card, and no money to get a decent one right now.

I was wondering if the boards with built in video would overclock as well. I have been reading the reviews on sites taht state the on board video kills the overclocking ability..??

i am looking at these...

GIGABYTE GA-965GM-S2 LGA 775 Intel G965 Express Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128024

OR

GIGABYTE GA-965G-DS3 LGA 775 Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128018

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Mike

i was even thinking of getting a REAL cheap pci-e card, but I think that would defeat the prupose also..?? I am talking under $50

The chipsets with intergrated video cannot do high FSB!

Your best bet is to get something like an X300 PCIe GFX card and use that Gigabyte board. The x300 is not very expensive either.
Even a PCI GFX card would be cheap to use!

Ok so as long as the video card is not on the motherboard it will have no effect on overclocking the cpu and/or the memory, correct?

never thought about a PCI video card..lol..dont have any of those left, but can probably get one REAL cheap or free :)

Thanx

I can get a PCI card with 8mb of memory on it :?

I dont think that will run Vista will it?

argh

Well let emk now if anyone thinks that will work...the wife still says I can get the motherboard, but I cant get a MB and video and HSF..lol...so I wont be able to overclock massively, but I think it could do some with the stock Intel HSF ;)

8mb PCI card? OUCH! That's gonna hurt!
Will it run VISTA?? Yes but with zero eye candy, even scrolling down a webpage will hurt!
You'll be suprised how far you can overclock using the stock hsf sometimes!

You can use a PCI video card. They are super cheap. I would look on eBay.

Are you serious? So VISTA uses 3D acceleration everywhere. If you use 2D mode I think you should be fine with a 8mb card. Or am I wrong?

Try running XP on an 8mb PCI card!!! The gfx/pics/ads on webpages is loaded into the gfx ram in 2d mode. Same with any digital photos etc.

It all depends on the screen res. but 8mb won't allow for much over 1024x786 without stuttering.

I see. I used to run Windows 98 in 1024x786 on a 2D only 4MB card, and I never had any video problems. Although that was Windows 98, and low res.

Lowest price PCI-E card.

They are both $30, so you might as well go for PCI-E if buying a new card. Although this one has a $10 rebate.

Out of curiosity, is it possible to turn off turocache?
