It seems that every so often defragmenting the RAID boot drive results in an error which requires either a drive rebuild or system that fails to restart. In some cases the problem requires a re-install of the OS. This happens with both XP and Vista Ultimate. Any thoughts????

Are you using the system own defrag software?

I'm using Intel Matrix Raid and Executive Software Diskeeper and am having no problems with defraging.
Curious to learn more about the problem PJ is having.

I am refering to the Windows XP and Windows Vista Ultimate defrag utilities with the Intel RAID.
- Chassis Coolermaster Centurian 5
Motherboard Intel D975XBX2 w/ 2674 BIOS
Processor Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Memory 2GB Crucial DDR2-533
Hard Drive 3-320GB Seagate Barracuda ES - RAID 5
CD/DVD Burner Plextor 760A
Floppy Drive Sony MPF-920
Graphics Card Matrox P650 PCIe
Power Supply PC Power & Cooling TurboCool 510 ASL
I just added another 320GB Seagate Barracuda ES and configured the system for 2 - RAID 0 drives with the same result -- every so often -- a system crash which may or may not require a repair or reload.

I opted not to use the built in defrag because it never fully defraged my HD's and it was slooooow. You can download a demo of Diskeeper here:
