D975xbx2 pauses at post code 5A

Hi,

my board is booting very slow. It takes about 10s to the Intel splash screen and pauses ~70s and longer showing post code 5A. This happens roughly 9 of 10 times. Sometimes it's booting at normal speed, which makes mit wondering.
Can the old optical devices (~5 years old) be the reason for that behaviour? They sometimes are not listed in the Bios Boot Menu as usable boot devices even though they are listed in the Drive Config Menu. They are correctly jumpered and ran without problems in my other system.

A friend of mine has the same problem too, but with other optical devices.

System is as follows:
MB: Intel D975XBX2 Ver. AAD53350-505
Bios:2663
CPU: E6600
Mem: Kingston ValueRam DDR2 667 2x1GB
VGA: Powercolor X1950pro 512MB
HDD: Seagate ST3250620AS SATA
Optical: LiteOn DVD IDE; HP CD Burner IDE

Bios Settings:
Peripheral Configuration:
Serial Port: Enable
Parallel Port: Disable
Audio: Disable
On-Board LAN: Disable
Secondary SATA-Controller: Disable
Onboard 1394: Enable

Drive Config:
Use Automatic Mode: Disable
Use Serial ATA: Enable
ATA/IDE Mode: Legacy (changing to native will cause windows to not boot)
SMART: Enable
Primary Channel: Enable
Hard Disk Pre-Delay:0

Only HDD and optical devices as boot devices enabled, no USB, LAN or else.

I've used an old parallel optical drive on this motherboard and it works.

Can you try:
Disconnect the parallel cord from the parallel connector.
In BIOS, Advanced, Drive Configuration
ATA/IDE Mode - Native
Save configuration and reboot.
...........
If all goes well, just add the master parallel IDE device to the terminal or end of the cable and reconnect the parallel connector.
In BIOS, Advanced, Drive Configuration
Use Automatic Mode - Enable
Save configuration and reboot.
...........
Reboot and enter BIOS again, and let the BIOS find the parallel IDE device.
In BIOS, Advanced, Drive Configuration
Use Automatic Mode - Disable
Save configuration and reboot.
........

You can add back the second parallel device and change the BIOS
settings as you go.

ATA/IDE Mode - Native doesn't work. There will be a blue screen during windows startup (normal and safe mode).
Are there noticeable differences between Legacy and Native?

Without the cd burner the post is very fast, so i assume that could be the problem. Are there any known issues concerning PIO mode? That drive does only support PIO mode 4, no U-DMA.

Are both the HP and LiteOn PIO only. You wasn't kidding when you
said you had old opitical drives ? :)

Well, "ancient" would be the proper adjective^^.

The HP is PIO only, the LiteOn is U-DMA 2.

Using just the Sata hard drive, can you use option the BIOS for Native ?

Nope, Windows welcomes me with a BSOD, similar to that, I think:

Driver is version 6.2.1.1002.

Go into Windows and under Device Manager, see what driver the hard
drive is using.

HDD: MS 5.1.2535.0

Intel 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7) SATA Controller: Intel 8.2.0.1008

I'm wondering, why that drive is connected to the primary IDE channel. Thought SATA drives are connected to another controller.
