E8400 Overclocking (not extreme)

So I've never had a chip that can overclock very well, but I've broke down and ordered an E8400 (the best CPU my current mobo can support).

For fun, I just thought I'd try 400Mhz FSB (which puts the CPU at 3600Mhz) and see if it woul POST, and to my supprise it did, and it even booted into windows stable (30mins ORTHOS, will try more later, currently finding maxium clock). But the best bit is that it has done this on the stock voltage of 1.12v

Compare that to needing 1.375v just to get the same amount of overclock out of my E6600 and it's an even better overclock for me.

So I'm a happy chappy and had to share

Man, there seems to be a 10oC discrepancy in reported temps between the two cores.

There is no such thing as a good CPU i think

She's under water now too (previous 3.6Ghz was on air )

Just use delta to TJunction or w/e Intel uses. I say make the delta 15 to 20C from the T thingy.

You could also use the motherboard temperature sensor to get a rough estimate of how hot your chip is. I just don't see the point in trying to find out how hot a CPU is when Intel didn't even release what the max Tjunction/TJmax thingy is.

DMB, think you can push it to 4GHz?

I'm not sure how far my ageing AW9D-MAX will go in terms of FSB (not being able to push the E6600 i couldn't check, even on 6x multi it was shocking).

I've found that the northbridge wasn't quite stable before (probably the tight memory timings), so have had to give that 1.64v (1.5v normal) to get it to play nice.

But I will try and see what I can get to

Yeah mine is screwed up too, when I boot up, one core will show around 10-12C and the other around 20C, both make no sense since ambient is atleast 20C

Just to give you a rough idea, mine was able to get 4.2GHz at 1.45V, didn't try any higher. Just running minimum voltage (1.1V) at stock frequency now, it's plenty of power and it runs cool.

E8400's stock speed is already 3.0GHz ... so it gets 3.6GHz ~20% increase ... which is NOT surprise at all.
I think with this CPU, you can easily oc to 3.8-4.0GHz.

All new chips (45nm) do not use much voltage comparing to the "old" CPUs. So with E8400@3600MHz, I think vcore should be around 1.25v -1.27v

Well the CPU is at least little bit good as i can do 3.6GHz with just 1.12v, though that was on my test board (IP35P).Unfortunately my AW9D-MAX doesn't go down that low, so I'm stuck at the higher stock voltage of 1.175v for the long term 3.6GHz.

When I get chance I'll push it, but I thought I had hosed my OS yesterday, as it hung on loading forever after a couple of resets, but system restore seems to have sort of fixed it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that manages to hose his OS occasionally. I finally got an E-Sata external and clone it on a regular basis. Of course since I've gotten the E-Sata setup I haven't hosed once. Figures.

You can easily take it to 4.0GHz with decent cooling. My E8400 at 4.0GHz did not exceed 50 C on load with a TRUE 120. By the way, to get the right temperatures, use RealTemp.

I agree with Digerati, if you're having temp troubles you definitely want to try RealTemp.

Congrats, good choice but ABIT AW9DMax doesn't match 1333 CPUs too much... (native 1066)

Yeah, my board is showing it's limits. It's playing nicely at 400Mhz FSB though, but I've had to use 1.64v on the MCH to get it stable.

What do you have to run yours at when you are doing 400Mhz FSB?

For fun I put the E8400 back in the IP35P a bit ago, and was able to hit 4Ghz, but didn't take the time to find the minimun voltage the CPU would run at.
Going for broke, I was able to get into windows at 4.5Ghz, but my 800Mhz memory really didn't like running at 1000Mhz (even at 2.4v) so a lack of lower dividers meant I couldn't even try and get the CPU stable as the memory was just a bit too flakey. I can't remember if held back on the CPU voltage at 1.4v or 1.45v, either way I was very conscious that my CPU might fry so I didn't leave it that high for very long.

When I finally get another motherboard, or some better memory, I shall have to have another go at pushing this chip.

i use 8500 on 780i. ABIT is a nice overclocker too but it has a poor BIOS and needs insane V MCH... I love my ABIT, specially with Pentium Ds/4s...

I'm not sure how well the E84 is going to do on my Asus P5N-E SLI 650i mobo. I'm planning for it to live most of it's life around 3.6Ghz anyway. I'm hoping for the 9x400 and done shot as well.
