my processor

Well, here i go just looking for some advice here.


I was just on my pc for a couple hours.


Its a Dell Dimension 5000, 2.8ghz P4... good oldie.... does the trick..


Because the CPU coolers are like huge ice blocks over the motherboard, and i was looking for some more slots for fans etc,


I took off the cpu cooler block, and i take out the processor, and i look under neath, and i see that my processor actually has no pins what so ever....


I was pretty wowed seems as though ever other processor ive laid my hands on has pins on it....

I cant remember if the actually socket had pins in it, i do not remember of such, but on the processor its self there was little pulse thingys on it but no pins at all.


So i put the processor back, and the cpu cooler, start up the PC, play some Steam games, and everything works as usual..



My theory: I took off the CPU while it was hot, and the pins have been left in the socket, and now they have been re melted back into the CPU?


I honestly dont know whats going on here.

I don't believe the pins would all have melted of even at 100°C and I doubt your prozessor is that hot^^.

The newer processors from intel don't have pins on them anymore, this is because there are now so many contacts, that if they had pins on them the pins would have to be so thin to fit them all on they would break too easily.

So instead they have the 'pins' on the motherboard side, and just contacts areas on the processor side.

I know jeez! lol i dont overclock it.... and i dont think its ever gotten over 70 degrees, i mean, i dont even have a temp gauage or what ever but i know it hasnt, it runs perfectly... all i do is play cs:s and eve sometimes..... lol



So really, does anyone know whats going on with my processor?


I dont know if i should take the cpu cooler off again when the computer has fully cooled down to see if them magic pins have stuck them selves back on or not scared if it will never work again!

I mean.. this isnt a new machine..... Spring 2005?

That's how the new sockets that came out around that time look now...if anything melted..you wouldn't be playing Steam..it would be playing out the back of your pc..since ya said that's how it looked..you should be fine..especially if you reply to this

Just asking, if i want to upgrade my processor would you be able to help me?


these are tricky things to get my head around... I can get the mobo spec etc in a hour or two, and i will post.


I could really want to get something like a Core2Duo, or a 3.0ghz+ P4

core2 duo, no, a new p4, yes. even though there the same socket intels older motherboards dont support newer procesors
