Quad Q6600 Dead or Alive?

Post by Maud'Dip »

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz) Socket 775 L2 8MB Cache OEM (SLACR)

How reliable is the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600?

I think my one is dead. After 14 months, never been overclocked.
I have not anyone to test it.

Switch on my PC one morning, and got no response from it.
Blank screen, no post, no beep but the fans go on.
Re-sitted the CPU a few time, reset the Bios… still no go.

Motherboard : Asus P5K Premium WiFi-AP Dead
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 faulty RMA then
Graphics Card Swapped tested OK
Monitor tested OK
PSU: Corsair HX 520W tested OK

Any advice appreciated.

Unless it's been battered from running at higher temps than it is designed to (and for a long period of time), I'd be more inclined to place blame for your PCs failure on the motherboard than the CPU.

I agree with Dan..especially since your list says "Motherboard : Asus P5K Premium WiFi-AP Dead" and "Memory: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 faulty RMA then" so it looks like you might have found one of your 2 culprits.(<--the list is not why I agree though btw..just thought I'd clear that up lol)

I have a Q6600 that is several years old and still running strong. I have had it 3.2Ghz the entire time, but with aftermarket cooling so the temps stay low. I would say that overall, they are extremely reliable if treated properly, but anything can happen.

I had an E7200 arrive DOA and here is how it would behave in the PC: The fans would spin up briefly (half a second maybe) and then shut down for around 3 seconds (no post or beeps). It would repeat that process indefinitely until I shut down the PC manually. I contacted Intel and the rep confirmed that the CPU was the culprit. I also swapped it out in 2 PC's, so I knew there was no doubt the CPU was dead.

If I were close by I would gladly test it for you in my test system. I suggest you find someone locally who can test it in their PC as that is the easiest way to eliminate it as the culprit. You could also swap out the ram to eliminate that, or at least run just one stick at a time.

Check your warranty on your Q6600, but I believe it is the Intel 3 year standard warranty, at least for boxed retail versions. Best of luck.
