pcu upgrade ?

Been thinking of upgrading the pc a little , not that i know what im doing
was wondering if anybody knows how to find out what the max processor my motherboard can handle.
I have currently a E6600 @ 2.4 ghz on a Elite group P965T-A motherboard

I guess they are a little dated now as the pc is around 3/4 years old.
also is it a job i could do myself or is it best left to some1 who knows what they are doing?

According to ECS' website they have a revision 1.0 and 1.0B of your motherboard. First thing you'll need to to is find the revision. Turn off the computer, open up the side panel and look for the revision printed on your motherboard. Then from there you can refer to these lists to see what you can put in your machine. Another thing, if you do buy another CPU be sure you update your BIOS now while it can still boot.

If you can follow simple instructions then you can swap out a CPU.

ECS's site is terrible, or well cant load for me at least , so here is an alternative .

But looking it over it seems like If you have the B model, you got quad core support, but then its only listing Q6600 which is still a solid processor, but you would probably have to get it off Ebay or something.

If you dont have the B model, then really all you can do is try and find the old E6700, which is just a 200mhz clock speed boost if I recall correctly; which I am betting you wont even really notice.

If it was me, I would continue saving until I could buy a new pc, or replace the mobo and cpu both.

Your system's still pretty decent albeit showing signs of age. You're unlikely to notice any noticeable improvement with just upgrading the CPU. Better off waiting a bit until you can do a platform change. Assuming you're a gamer, you might be better served by a GPU upgrade.

Do i have to reinstall windows after a new upgrade motherboard with new RAM but everything else is the same including the hard drive?

The motherboard's actually the determining factor. There are hacks you can try to get your old install to work but a clean Windows reinstall is going to cause fewer headaches.
