9600KF Unexpected Overclock

Post by DJ Tucker »

So, it would seem my 9600kf is a little odd. For a while now I was hitting 4.8ghz @ 1.2v and 4.8ghz avx @ 1.248v. I would then have to increase voltage by .05v for every 100mhz to be fully stable so 5ghz is my max before pushing over 1.35v for 5.1ghz+.

After messing around today for most of it, it turns outs cache ratio is the issue. As soon as I go above 45x cache I have to add a lot more voltage to be stable as above. So at 4.8ghz I was at 4.5ghz cache and add 100mhz to both for making me add .05v to be stable.

So i did a little test and kept cache at 4.5ghz and surprize I am stable so far at 5ghz @ 1.264v and 5ghz avx @ 1.308v. I tried cache 4.6ghz and I suddenly needed 1.296v non avx and 1.344v avx to be stable and voltage only increased for each 100mhz cache.

Strange that my 5ghz avx load dropped from 150watts to 135watts. that's a large saving in energy. so to make sure I am fully stable I fired up a few games varying in cpu usage. from most cpu intense first we have warzone, ark survival evolved, killing floor 2 and crossout. All past for 1 hour gameplay each. The gameplay is the main reason for me having to take a whole day testing but so far 5ghz stable far lower then expected :) 5.1-5.2ghz here I come, maybe?

I have not overclocked in a while as I can't afford to replace this right now ;) I did find this - "Keep cache ratio a most 3-5x lower than core ratio for best performance, though different workloads will lead to different results." - I think on Reddit but I closed the tab and for the life of me I can't find it again (amazing how search results can be different all the damn time).

Heck I can't even play with Windows 11 because I don't have TPM :(

Good luck with 5.6ghz - 5.2ghz is for noobs

DJTucker....Sounds like you found your CPUs "Sweet Spot"! :supz:
Like KnightRid I do not OC anymore!
Too much possibility of failure! Gets costly fast!

KnightRid....
I'm kind of looking forward to Win11, but I'll need a TPM 2.0(add on card)....BUT!
If you really want to try out Win11 KnightRid....

so while 5ghz is stable i have an issue with non avx loads. It would seem 5ghz at anything below 1.296v is not stable but avx load is even if avx is 1.316v. so i need 1.308v for 5ghz non avx to be stable but that pushes my avx up 1.36v which while temps are fine (72c 140watts avx) it's above the safe 1.35v. besides at low loads, as many games barely push more the 50% of my cpu at 5ghz my avx vcore hits upwards of 1.39v.

For safety i have got 4.9ghz non avx stable at 1.248v (60c) and avx 1.296v (72c). shame as this cpu could go higher but a voltage wall at 4.8ghz causes me to have play safe than push limits. would rather 4.9ghz at safe voltage then 5ghz pushing max safe voltage :)

As for windows 11. i have this and it performs really well besides windows and windows apps taking longer to load. gaming performance is the same and as i dont do production work i cannot tell you if that is any better than windows 10.

Voltage is the killer :( Still at 4.9ghz I would be happy!
