Intel 6600 Core 2 Duo OCing?

Have ordered Intel D975XBX2KR board,6600 Core 2 Duo, (2x1Gb)OCZP800R22GK memory, PNYGeForce8800GTS graphics, Samsung 226BW 22" LCD, CoolermasterCAC-TO5-UW case with 500W CoolermasterASAA PSU. "Green" doesn't even start to describe knowledge of computers. My question is this... What settings would I need to change to overclock the 6600 to 3GHz.? I chose this setting because it looks like from reading these & other forums that 3GHz is a reasonably conservative speed. Thanks in advance for any good advice

You can try this, it worked for me. Everybody has different results. If you are uncertain of you abilities, hold off until you feel more confident. Making changes in BIOS can wreak havoc on your PC if you arenâ€™t careful.

1. Move BIOS jumper to post setting, then disable 'Failsafe Watchdog' & reboot,
2. Go to BIOS again and set memory ref freq to 200 & mem freq to 533.
3. Then set CPU to 300mhz.
4. Reboot and if it boots in to windows, run some tests or programs to see if it's stable. If not go back to step 2 and decrease CPU mhz.
5. If it doesn't boot, go back to step one and move BIOS post jumper, go in to BIOS and set back to default and try again.

thanks Sparky I'll try your suggestion. I wrongly thought if someone else had the exact same set-up that the same settings would give the same results. Is it fair to say the Intel CPU fan is inadequate for even minor OC as most seem to have added their own coolers. Does this void the warranty?

I never even tried the stock heatsink/fan combo. I too had read that it was inadequate and based on my results with my AMD 4800X2 (939 socket) I installed a Zalman 9500 and never looked back. Runs nice and cool, didn't use the speed control, just hooked it up to the mobo fan controler.

Does setting the system settings that you've listed above decrease the speed of the memory? I only ask as I plan to get Corsair 800Mhz RAM but don't want to waste the money if I'm not going to notice any improvement over 533/667 RAM

he told you to move it down because if u kept it at 800 and then oc'ed it would have had a memory error

Exactly what I was saying odie2190. I have found my system is fast enough for what I do without OCing the RAM.
