Discussion about Intel CPUs and overclocking. Need help with that new Intel processor? Not sure which one is right for you? Like to void your warranty? This is the place for you! Please keep the topic on Intel Processors!
Hi,
I have gone through setting up my Intel D975XBX2 and it seems ok.
I have been looking at overclocking and tried out a setting that was discussed on another thread in the m/b section.
I got a good 3.1ghz and I tried a stress test with "orthos" and "core temp". At idle I show 45/44 and after a minute of orthos I show 65/65.
Taking back to normal unclocked I show 43/42 at idle and 60/60 with orthos after a minute.
Does anyone think those temps are acceptable?
Obviously the o/c setting is on the high side but is it reasonably safe? tia.
Stuart.

what cooler are you using? is it stock? if so I might reccomend getting a better cooler to reduce the temps. They seem slightly high at least for stock clock speeds.
Temps seem ok at idle, could stand to be a little lower, but from what I've read max temp for Core 2 Duo is 60 degrees C.
Are you using the heatsink/fan combo that came with CPU? I didn't even bother after all the negative I read about its inability to keep it cool. I am using a Zalman 9500 and my E6700 is mildly OC'd to 3.0ghz, and it idles at 30-33 degrees C.

Hi,
I have just the heatsink/fan combo that came with CPU.
That zalman set seems to be doing a good job .
Not sure I really need the extra oomph of o/c tho.
The standard non o/c temps look ok?

Not sure about the temps non-oc with stock heatsink/fan, but I would think they could be lower, especially since my slight OC runs cooler, but with Zalman.
Zalman 9500 or 9700 is a really good investment even if you’re not going to OC. I figure it reduces the CPU temp and must reduce overall temp inside my case as well, so all my components must benefit.
I have an E6600, oc'd to 3.2. Antec Nine Hundred case with a Tuniq Tower 120 and my PC idles around 20 deg C (ambient or a tick less). Folding at 100% (non-smp) it's idling at 31 deg C (20.6 deg C ambient). Gaming with folding running, it runs around 38-39 deg C.
I just edited my earlier temps because I keep my pc in a desk enclosed with poor air circulation.
Just removed it and set it on the floor, ran some benchmarks (3DMark05 & 06) and it is running 33-35 degrees C.

Are you using the Intel Fan Utility Software that came on the CD ?

Hi,
Well I have the "Desktop control" running but I am only able to use the processor fan as the case provides no facility to hook up to the board.
I have the cpu fan set to come on at 100% when it hits 60c so I could boost it earlier. I have had the case fans set to high and its ok but not sure I want to have the noise

personally, I wouldn't feel very comfortable with those temps, but I'm pretty anal about my cpu temps like that.
I have the Tuniq Tower on my e66 overclocked to 3.4 now and with my machine folding full time my load temps are about 52-53C. Idle I'm anywhere between 38-40C. This is with the Antec Nine Hundred case.
My other case at this speed is about 63C under load.
In all honesty at stock you are fine, but you will notice quite an improvement if you get a different cooler.
