Overheating problem

I have a D975XBX2 board wit a Quad processor. My zone temperatures are fine (around 33C). At idle speed, the Processor Thermal Margin is around 42C, which is fine. Low stress apps work just fine and the temperature doesn't change much. I installed and ran MS Flight Simulator and the system shut down with a msg that the Processor Thermal Margin had droppd to 10C. I changed the game settings lower and still had the problem. I have a huge heat sink. Could it be a problem with the thermal glue not being applied properly? Any other ideas? Thanks, Jay.

I hope you didn't use thermal adhesive when you put on your heatsink >_<

But seriously, it is probably that the heatsink isn't properly sat on the CPU, or maybe it is in how you have applied the thermal paste.

Try reinstalling the heatsink. When you take off the heatsink from this time round, pull it off pretty perpendicular to your board and look at the thermal paste on the bottom of the heatsink and processor and see if it is making good even contact and has spread out enough. sometime too much thermal paste can cause bad cooling.

make sure you use core temp for monitoring the temps on the chip... that way you can see if it really is overheating... if it is then probably not seated the heatsink properly..
