You'd have to atleast upgrade the motherboard. Most likely the PSU as well. That RAM you have would need to be changed as well.

So basically, you would have to get a new CPU, motherboard, RAM and PSU.

Ram is fine, Motherboard and PSU yes. The Chipset cannot handle the quad core chip. Also cooling would need to be updated. Remember your cooling is handling just 1 core. Your adding 3 more. Cooling would not be able to keep up.

what brand. Like Zertz said. A cheap PSU may be rated at 600W but it all depends how that 600W is achieved. It may be peak wattage, meaning it can really only supply 500W or so.

That's a good motherboard. Powersupply is good as well, I approve, that will power things well. Another issue you still have to consider is cooling like I said. But a big issue with Dells is that they use no-standard mounting for the motherboards. So you might not be able to mount the motherboard in the case

how would i know if i could mount the motherboard in the case

If we know the model number, then maybe we can find a manual that shows the motherboard layout and also the screw hole positions.

Can you just confirm for me that the motherboard is on the right side of your case (looking at it from the back).

I think that your case/motherboard are a BTX standard. (If it is on the right then it definitely is). Nearly all motherboards out today are ATX standard (BTX isn't old, it just didn't take off very well, and has problems dissipating large amounts of case heat (so a quad core would NOT be a good idea in that configuration)).

So if you want to continue the upgrade, I'm afraid you will need another case.
