Intel P4 3.0 775 Prescott or Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
I have a Intel P4 3.0 775 Prescott and an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 and i was wondering what would be the better choice for video game performance. both are left overs from computers that i have had given to me for parts and I'm looking to build on as a secondary PC and the other to sell. I know the E6300 is 1.86GHz and that the P4 is 3.0 but one is dual core and i was wondering if that would make enough of a difference to counteract the P4's Prenticing advantage. I would like the fact of overclockability to be a factor b/c i just can't live with a stock PCU. Any Help Would Be appreciated.

Completely different processors! Dont be fooled by numbers. Core 2 Ghz performance is not equal to P4 Ghz performance! A core 2 is alot faster clock to clock! Plus it has much lower wattage (cooler, silent) and is highly overclockable (almost up to 100%). Its way faster altogether. Go for the 6300!!
Here look at this:

You see the HUGE performance gap?
now look again with a dual core Pentium 4

Big difference again (6300 is at 1.86 with small wattage while D930 is at 3G and is a frypan)

thanks i was thinking that the core 2 would be faster it looks like it would be faster than my AMD 3800 X2 that i have. Alright thanks for the input.

I replaced my brothers P4 with the similarly clocked E4300 and it was noticably faster at everything.
What dkarko said is totally true too.

again tanks guys makes it easier what to do with what, and i couldn't find a hard to head comparison to be sure. I have a AMD 3800+X2 socket 939 and that seems to be the same way as this chip cooler and faster. Runs circles around my buddies 2.6 single core, he even went so far as to buy a 8600 to try to out do me and my 7950gx2 but he still can't even come close. I really can't see not using a multi core processor from here out. I'm more of an AMD guy so when i needed Intel support i came here.
Not to seem to off topic but are the Q6600 with the G0 stepping really as good as i hear. Is it true that all 4 cores have to share the 1066FSB for 266.5 per core that would seem like a real bottleneck. Let me know hate you guys think b/c my AMD MoBo has crapped out again and I've been looking at that chip for my possible next build. But I'm not sure of how it will preform against AMD's new quad's. Even my 3800 X2 had 1Ghz FSB per core. let me know I'm sure I'll get a lop of praise for the chip and it deserves it for how versicle it is. Thanks for the help so far looks like the P4 is gunna be looking for a new home. : )

AMD's HT Link and Intel's FSB don't work the same way. For AMD, theres no improvement past ~800Mhz, but for Intel, higher FSB leads to better performance.
Dual is better than single core, especially that the new architectures are more efficient in alot of ways so of course your C2D is faster than your friends 2.6Ghz.
Of course your GX2 is better, it's basically a SLI setup and GeForce 8 (beside 8800's) are not better than the previous generation.
G0 overclocks better, that's all, it doesn't perform better. The FSB isn't divided between each core. Theorically, native quad-core is better compared to Intel 2 dual cores on one die, so AMD might hold an advantage here, but we don't really know yet. And yes P4 is trash compared to C2D.
