multiplier question

Post by stopthekilling77 »

i have the E6750, and ive changed the multiplier twice now in the BIOS, just to have it not change when i check CPU-Z. all other BIOS settings made the switch... clues?
i think i'm gonna tweak the FSB for now, but im wondering why i cant mess with my multiplier at all

You are trying to lower the multi? You can't increase it pass stock, you'll need an extreme edition for that.

does CPUZ default to the 6x multi? If it does, then disable Enhanced C1 (C1E) & Enhanced Intel Speedstep tech in the bios.
Enhanced C1 (C1E) will lower your CPU multi down to 6x when idle...........this should be disabled when overclocking, at least until you find the overclock stable.

The only way that the multiplier can go is down with non ee cpu's.

Were you trying to go up or down with it?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh okay. well my first overclock is a success then! (had no clue the EE's were the only ones who could go higher than whatever is stock.)

Ken, thanks a lot! my system is now @ 2.80Ghz from the stock 2.66Ghz!!!! and i plan to test for a while then go up some more :) :) :) :) :) :)

@ Dan, thanks!! i might try a lower multiplier with a higher FSB but we'll see. now that i've voided the warranty, i have no qualms about testing this system!

that is no where near the limit of that CPU... ~4GHz with water cooling and 3.6-3.8Ghz with after market air cooling is what you should be aiming at!

400MHz FSB will give you 3.2Ghz clock frequency, 1600MHz FSB and a nice memory clock depending on what divider you use!

Give 400MHz a try!

time to run prime95 for a bit, but i'm at 3.2, and its not even hiccuping. Temps have stayed at 30C-34C idle, nothing past 46C under Prime95. we shall see!

To test for RAM stability I always use SuperPi Mod 1.5. Run at least the 8M test, if you get a rounding error your RAM isn't completely stable. Another application I've found to be the most picky when it comes to RAM stability is the game Company of Heroes. Somehow CoH:OF is even more picky about RAM stability than it's predecessor.

been stable, i ran Prime95 (stressed both cores) for about 3.5 hours yesterday, and i plan on going for overnight soon as well. i'll have to download SuperPi as well then, but my Mushkin is at 5-5-5-15 right now for the OC, we'll see if i can tighten those timings soon
