HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
I have recently purchased new guts for my computer,
Intel core 2 quad q6700
Abit IP35 pro - motherboard
OCZ 4GB pc2-5400 ddr2 - Ram
the default temperature program was alarming and running high, so i came on the internet to investigate. I noticed some of you guys said to run core temp and this is my results, there bad, real bad,
This is my computer just with this page open
Freq 2660.00Mhz
platform LGA 775
VID 1.2750v
Temp readings
Tj. Max 100 C
Core 0 73 c
Core 1 77 c
Core 2 77 c
Core 3 77 c
i have just installed a clean copy of vista Ultimate
At this moment in time i have the front cover off and a desk fan on full power facing the cpu.
I have also reseated the fan and cpu and put on new compound, Antec Formula 5.
Like i said i have only just bought these items is there something wrong???
Any replys would be most helpfull
Thanks in advance

Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
ive tried reapplying 3 times now
Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
How much paste are you putting on?
You only need a very small amount, like the size of a grain of rice. Just put it in the middle of the CPU, and the heatsink will spread it out great.
And try to clean off the current paste as best you can before you reapply this time (in case you haven't been)

Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
i spread it finely over the fan and put half a grain of rice ammount onthe cpu, and spread that out too, its so frustrating
Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
Just for kicks, try pushing down on the fan assembly when the PC is on to make sure it is making good contact with the CPU.
When you have been taking the heatsink off, did you notice if the thermal paste had been 'squashed' on the heatsink/cpu, and if you noticed, was it all the way across the CPU/Heatsink, or say for example only in one corner?

yea i have been removing it every time, i have been spreading it before pushing the cpu on, i really dont trust the fan. its one of those 4 plastic screws, not like the bar that pushes over the fan, am i making sense?
Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
Yeah, I know what you mean, it's the stock intel retention mechanism.
The only other thing is that you might not have clipped in the plastic legs in properly then.
First make sure that the legs have been rotated as far as they will go in the opposite direction to the moulded arrows on the top, then give the 'pegs' a lightish tug back to make sure they are fully up, then line up the CPU cooler and press very firmly on one of the pegs till you hear it click in, then do the other 3 legs (in a diagonal pattern).
You may have to use a almost scary amount of force to get the last two legs to click into place properly, but you'll know when they are in as trying to wobble the legs that are in will mean they won't go anywhere, but the loose ones will wobble quite a bit.
Hope this helps.

Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
so when you attach the legs its just a push down thing is it?
cause i have been screwing it
cause i have been screwing it
Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
Yeah, its a push clip in thing.
To undo it you have to screw it, the legs all turn 90degrees (towards the arrow), and then you will be able to pull the legs up and remove the cooler.
But to put it in you make sure the legs are back from the arrows and then push them in.

Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
what you mean leg back from the arrows, the straight edge is facing the heat sink?
Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
Turn the arrows towards the middle of the heatsink. Pull up all of the black plastic legs (if they are not already up).
Turn all of the legs back (opposite direction to the arrows) so that the arrows are away from the heatsink, i think they will be pointing anticlockwise around the cooler now (backs of the arrow towards the middle of the cooler).
Paste up, align the cooler with the holes, then push down on the black legs till they click into place.
Jobs a good 'un.

Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
its running between 55 and 65 at stand still, itsnt that still a lil high?
Re: HELP!!! intel core 2 quad q6700 overheating
I don't know what the normal idling temperature of that CPU is, but to me it does seem a little high still.
Fancy one last try with reapplying the thermal paste, now that you know how to put the fan on properly?
