E8400 45nm Temp reading problems
E8400 45nm Temp reading problems
I've been hearing that the E8400 has been having problems with temperature reading problems? Some stuck on 50C, some stuck on 17C until core temps equalize then jump to 50C. I'm a little out of touch with Intel due to years of AMD, but I thought I'd better ask as the e8400 was what I've been looking at for when I go to an Intel platform.
Thanks
Thanks

That is what The INQ is saying:
Source: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/ ... rted-intelA HEAP of heat problems with Intel’s E8400 microprocessor are being reported on a host of hardware forums.
Users are claiming that the sensor diodes aren’t up to scratch and that’s causing the overclockers to get overheated themselves.
That’s not something Intel is admitting. A response from an Intel techie to a user over at OC Forums claims it has nothing to report on sensor problems but that just seems to be adding fuel to an already crackling blaze.
A search on Saint Google reveals there’s plenty of heated discussion raising people’s temperatures around the world. µ
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of animals Chuck Norris allows to live.

There are a lot of threads about this on various forums. I haven't honestly read them but it seems to be a real issue.

Could this be a bigger issue with the quads and why they are being delayed?

I think I'm going to head down to the local shop later and fire up one or two and check it out before I buy one, It'd be just my luck to buy a turkey.

Re: E8400 45nm Temp reading problems
You have a local shop in Joplin that stocks E8400???! I don't know if there is anyone here in St. Louis that has them....
I picked up a couple at Microcenter when I was in Cincinatti (how close was I to your place Joe?) a couple of weeks ago and neither have temp issues. One is on my P5B and the other is on a P5K.

They stock one or two of about every thing, any more there's about 7 shops, they have a tendency to buy and try then sell. The one I saw down town wasn't stuck on a temp and reported accurately (close as we could tell using a laser thermometer). Charlie said he thought it was an early batch that had the problem.

Re: E8400 45nm Temp reading problems
I'm not sure what to make of this just yet.
I remember the change in Tjunction on G0 stepping Q6600's threw off quite alot of monitoring software by 15c. Then at the time the equally new FSB1333 chips also had temp sensor issues. The E8400's Tjunction has changed drastically (something like 105c now), so it could be having an equally drastic problem on sensors that read the internal core diodes, just like last time.
Another thing I noticed was the old fashioned means of reading the CPU socket temp sensor was not affected, for the obvious reasons it has nothing to do with the actual CPU. These still seem to be a sure way to check a E8400's temps...

Re: E8400 45nm Temp reading problems
You guys are just trying to cheer me up. I have been a little down over choosing the E6750 over the E8400 and this takes a little of the sting away.
But yes, I heard a lot about E8400 heat and temperature related issues. I think it was a specific batch or batches that had the problem and not all of them. I would not recommend buying one any time soon.

I'd still buy one today (E8400) today if I had the cash..................
I could really care less about the temp reading issues that they are having, I only care about how well they OC..............

Having the cooling power to dissapate any heat they might be kicking out is bound to give you that ballsy attitude.Bio-Hazard wrote:I'd still buy one today (E8400) today if I had the cash..................I could really care less about the temp reading issues that they are having, I only care about how well they OC..............

I've been able to resist the allure of Penryn... not that they have any Quadcore versions around anywayBio-Hazard wrote:I'd still buy one today (E8400) today if I had the cash..................I could really care less about the temp reading issues that they are having, I only care about how well they OC..............

I'm saving up for Nehalem instead... it's going to require a new motherboard, new CPU, and a kit of DDR3 RAM (New sockets, DDR3 only CPUs, etc). I'll let Intel iron out bugs and perfect their 45nm fabrication process as they always do within 6-12 months in the meantime.

No big deal for an extra 400-800MHz, it's just the same "Core" design inside with a great deal more cache and some optimizations that work best in encoding tasks.

My sentiments exactly. I will most likely not upgrade until that time comes.Kougar wrote:I'll let Intel iron out bugs and perfect their 45nm fabrication process as they always do within 6-12 months in the meantime.
