Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 45nm CPU Overclocking - Wolfdale

Post by Apoptosis »

Got my hands on an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 processor, which is the fastest 45nm dual-core processor that Intel has on the market today.

I have been playing around with it on an ASUS P5E3 Deluxe motherboard and the results have been impressive so far.

At stock speeds the processor runs 333MHz with a 9.5 multiplier to reach the standard clock of 3.16GHz.

Just for fun I went into the BIOS and increased the front side bus from 333MHz to 400MHz while not touching a single other setting and the system rebooted and was running 3.6GHz at 400MHz FSB! The computer was 100% stable and no extra voltage was needed.

Not happy with just that I cranked up the Vcore to 1.45V and was able to reach 500MHz FSB with little effort. The processor was now running 4.5GHz with full stability! The processor still has more left in it as there are no errors and it's fully stable. More to come.

That CPU is beastly! Its hard to believe the overclocking headroom in the newer Intel chips...Go Intel! :supz:

Do you think the quad will do the same? If not, I'm thinking about it. I was going to wait for intel to lose the fsb, so I wouldn't have to buy another motherboard for the next upgrade. But, those o.c. speeds are impressive! What would you do?

Had to bump up the voltage to 1.525V, but I was able to hit 515MHz FSB:

I then cranked up the voltage to 1.55V and hit 526MHz... Now I have conference calls to attend, so I need to take a break.

I know you are just basically suiciding this chip right now, but dont forget that the manufacturing shrink means that 1.5v on a 45mn is basically the same as 1.6v on the 65nm's.

There are reports of 'high' voltage degrading the maximum stable overclocks of the 45nm's. It's too early for it to be conclusive, but this thread on XtremeSystems has about 8/9 reported cases.

Otherwise Happy overclocking!

Q series are kings of 3DMark06, but E series just get high MHzs and low Super Pi (with 6 MB L2) I have both Q6600 and E8400 and would like to have a QX9xxx instead of this little pigz :snakeman:
