I am getting ready to build a computer for my brother. I am looking at processors and from everything I can see the E6750 is the faster processor, but the E6600 is about $40 more. Does anyone know why the E6600 is more expensive? I am getting the pricing from Newegg.com but i have also notice other sites run about the same.

I believe newer (presumably better) processors get released at the older price points, stepped lower. As a recent example, the official prices for the E8400 is cheaper than the E6850 (same price as E6750, I believe), but the specs sheet and performance benchmarks show that it's at least marginally better than the E6850.

Maybe the E6600 is just old stock they haven't sold yet.

The E6600 was sold to retailers at a higher price than the E6750 was.

If the E6600 was sold at the price for where it currently performs retailers would lose money, so they sell their remaining stock to make a profit. During this time new CPUs are coming out that perform better that are cheaper. And the fact that they don't make them anymore... less availability of a product generally means higher costs.

The only reason to select an E6600 over an E6750 is if you have an old motherboard that does not support the E6750.

i see no reason at all why you would want an e6600 over an e6750...

E6750 = G0 stepping.
G0 Stepping = Better core, FSB can OC higher and it consumes less power!

Most E6750's can hit ~3.6GHz

The only possible advantage is that the E6600 has a 9* multi rather than the 8* multi of the E6750.

But with how high FSB's overclock these days it's a mute point. As you will probably reach the CPU's maximum before you do the boards.

cost $707.92 + $25.17shipping $733.09 A comparable Dell would have cost him $1500.00 - he didnt realize he could get such a decent computer for this price..

He has a Sata Hard drive already.. I told him we could save $90.00 buy using a bootleg XP -and up the card to a 8800gt 512 - but he chose the legit OS over the better card.

Tell him Congrats! That looks to be a very solid build.

Another build with out any major problems.. only thing that stumped us for a bit was when installing XP and we kept getting the message "unable to locate hard drive on this system" -- I used a sata adaptor for the hard drive- I had the adaptor plugged in but I forgot to attach the 4 pin to it.. duh!
