I've never really done anything with over-clocking before, but given I heard such good things about the Q6600 G0 model, I figured I could get a little more speed out of it relatively painlesly..

I first up bumped the FSB to 333, giving me an effective of 1332 and a cpu speed of 3ghz. I pushed the memory multiplier down to 5:6, so she's running at 800mhz stock on the ram still.

I ran four instances of prime95, Torture test, the max heat option..

All four cores maxed out, and I got temps holding at 40° - 42° (Mostly sitting on 41°, did not exceed 42°) Stable for 20 minutes, then 21 minutes in, core 3 gave a rounding error.

Oh well, for 20 minutes I had a stable 3ghz machine..

I'm guessing it was a voltage issue, as I had not given it any extra juice, but people far more knowledgeable here probably know what likely caused it.

I've dropped the FSB to 300 giving an effective 1200.. Temps are again 35° System, and 39° - 40°

I have the memory multiplier at 2:3 right now, so I have OC'd that slightly to 900mhz..

I'm at 22 minutes right now in another full prime95 onslaught.. No issues arisen yet..

Anyone got any suggestions, or thoughts?

Well just simply from reading the how to guide on this forum I have already discovered that the tool that Gigabyte shipped with the board is inadequate.. instead of the 40° it is reporting, Hardware Monitor, and Core Temp agree that my cores are ranging from 49° - 52°..

There's a secondary onBoard sensor which is clocking in at 40, but not my CPU it would seem.

helped me out a TON when i ventured into the art of OC.

well, first of all the great thing about prime 95 is that you only need to run 1 instance and it automaticlly makes multiple threads for each procesor. as for the rounding issue, you probably need to give it just a little more juice(voltage), i had to give my quad a little juice to get it to 3ghz, but i have a different board than you so i dont know

There is no such thing as 20 minutes stable. You're either stable or you're not.

I'm surprised that quad did not do 3Gz on stock voltage considering its a Go, but then again, all chips are different.

I would set it back to 333 fsb and manually increase the voltage by one notch, then run Prime again. If you went 20 minutes, then you are very close to stable, and one notch more voltage should do the trick.

I would not try to overclock the ram until you have the cpu stable and running at the speed you want.

You can monitor temps with Core Temps and use HW Monitor as a backup to compare. (yes they always match)

I use CPU-Z to monitor cpu voltage and use HW Monitor as a backup once again. (yes they always match)

Here are some numbers for a Q6700. You will have to adjust to fit your chip. Stock speed 2.66 overclocked speed 3.44 voltage 1.40 fsb343 multiplier 10 rev/step b/go.

Just as a follow-up, I meant to post back sooner, but never got to it.

I pushed the voltage up a notch at 333, and have since been running stable at 3ghz.

I idle at around 33.
