Close Call!

Whew, well heres the story(two parts)my comp is on its side with the case open, so somehow my earphone wire gets stuck into cpu fan, and it stops and then someone knocks @ the door so i go to open it(somehow completely forgetting about the cpu thing) i come back 15min later to see that its almost on fire lol... and the hsf is totaled, sounds like a v8 engine is pressed up against my ear when the fan is turning,

so i decided to put the old intel one on while im waiting for thermalright 120 extreme... so i go into bios.. and it says 66c cpu temp for e6300 @ stock ... i don't really think much of this for some reason, then i notice the comp keeps on restarting, so i finally get into windows, and i look @ the hsf, it seems like its on tight...i check the temps and its @ 248F didnt have time to shut down as it did this by itself about 2seconds later, then i fixed the hsf and sittin @ 60c now.. yeah i made some pretty stupid mistakes(including trying to get the old backplate out with a pencil instead of removing the wires n stuff, which took about 45min of struggling )

Hopefully you don't work on computers for a living.

I would have avoided answering the door until the problem was fixed or had the machine shut down.

Hey! why were you in there with the machine running open case anyways??? :-k

i dunnno, i just let the wire drop, and thought to myself, whatever it won't drop right into the hsf(thought it would just fall to the side of the case or somethin wasnt directly thrown into the hsf lol)... and it did lol and i was busying doing something for a while, after i pulled the wire out i noticed it was broken n stuff, there was an additional 120mm fan ontop of the hsf, and that was just blown off lol and someonehow the fan under it(which belonged to the hsf was broken)

open case to reduce heat :P, glad to say it seems fine now lol, but one thing i did notice was how quiet the intel fan was compared to the zalman

And here I thought my TT Big Typhoon was big in my case! Your 120mm fan over the MOBO looks even bigger than mine.

Just be happy it didn't pull you into the computer tugging on those ear buds. :) It's seen the movie TRON too many times.

that reminds of when i try to see how hot the HS is and accidentally slide my fingers into the fan  i've only broken 2 fins  (don't worry, i super glued them back on nearly like new) that certainly messes up the DB level because it is not balanced, but both times, once i fix it, it's good as new

i think on a sub conscious level i knew summer was coming and I wouldn't be able to sustain the same oc with the same cooler, so maybe i "let" it break so i would have an excuse to buy a new one :O

Open cases sometimes reduce the efficiency of the cooling... might want to check with the door on and off just for fun :)

Glad you didn't fry it!

Interestingly enough, my systems runs around 3-4c cooler with the door off. :-k

Mine runs cooler with the door on, but I have a 250mm side fan.

Ahhhh that huge fan would make a big difference. My door has no fan, just a small vent.

My test system also has a door with no fan. It has an acrylic panel with no vent, so it also runs cooler with the door off.

it really depends on the aerodynamics of the case. some do better with the panel on because it creates a bigger "Jetstream" effect but some do better with the panel off

well i would imagine that the heat would rise ? since the case is on its side all the heat is going up/out

Yea the heat will rise, stirred by the exhaust fans and what not. This time around I got a case with a top exhaust and it's made a pretty good difference.

Sounds like a close call indeed.

Glad nothing major was broken.

well dont be so glad lol i think i fried my system :-(... well as i was installing the new hsf my the mobo was kind of resting ontop of the case pin things but not locked into its normal position, and the extreme 120 fan set up was pretty odd so i decided to see which way the fan blows air before i attach it... i put the plug back in and turn on the comp and press the power button, shuts off right away and smells like burning computer(no smoke though), i fix the hsf up, and start it up, well it powers up but won't go past det dram, also the normal things like clearing cmos or trying to reset the battery did nothing to help, usually if i put one mem stick in the 2nd slot and one in the third it helps it get past det dram and usually goes onto the post screen before freezing(but then i remove 3rd stick and it works) but even that did not work, so im really wondering if there is anything that can be done to saved the comp :-|

Sounds like you've shorted some contacts on the back of the motherboard with the case and motherboard standoffs. Ouch dude.

Maybe you can RMA the board?

For working out which way a fan blows in the future, just remember they blow towards the X of the mounting frame.

So only the motherboard would be killed not any of the other parts? well i packed up the mobo and will be returning it tomorrow,,, and still got warrenty on ram, psu seems fine, dunno about video card or cpu though, guess it wouldnt cost that much to get a q6600/3870 if they are burned out, on a brighter note, when i removed the hsf the paste was spread out very well :)

Can't vouch the others won't have been fried as a result, but that does seem to be what happened.

so i guess ill just return the ram as well to get that out of the way, the smell didnt seem like it was coming from the whole board but more from the bottom end of it towards the gfx card area, guess this should be a good learning experience lol,q6600+3870=300-400 ish worst case scenario... hopefully itll just be the motherboard, but what are the chances of only the motherboard being destroyed and everything else being fine?i just remembered something, when i attached the dvi cable to the gfx card the " no signal detected" thing went away (even though nothing else appeared) does this mean the video card is still working?

okay well i got it back, the temps seem kinda high though, 46-48C idle? Should i try to refit it? with thermalright 120 extreme with 120mm fan
