What one has the best bang for the buck when over clocked to a say an average 30%.
What would you vote for as the ideal one today?

depends on what price point you are talking about!

The Q6600 was still only $199 at frys yesterday, add it to your cart to see the final price. It overclocked from 2.4 to 3.0 ghz pretty easily.

In the end basically a bench number say SPECmarks per dollar.

The Q9450 is an exceptional CPU. Its relatively cheap at 350-370. It's stock speed is 2.66, but I've got it running rock solid at 3.8. Hopefully, when I get some more time to try, I'm going to get it running at 4.0Ghz.

so what does that come to in SPECmarks to the dollar?

You can't just look at them with a benchmark, you have to know how much you are willing to spend, how long it has to last you, if you want to go quad or stay dual etc.
The Q6600 is at a very attractive price point for a quad.
The E8500/E8400 are great for dual core.
The Q9450 is a very nice quad for a little more money than the Q6600.
The E21XX's are great performance on a budget, with overclocking potential to boot.

I'm just curious is all. If I find a nice easy table to work with then maybe i can get the numbers posted. Some people simply want to get the best bang for the buck to make the most efficient use of their money.
The best that a bottom feeder can get basically =)

Well, if you are spending $200 on a CPU go with the Q6600.
We cannot really tell you what is a good option unless you give us some information. What is the most you would ever think of spending on a processor?

No I'm not buying I was just wondering I'll just see if I can find a SPECmark chart and run it against a price list.

ok ^_^
If you don't find a chart, and end up making one yourself, be sure to put them into price brackets ($100 brackets seems sensible).

The E2180 is pretty good bang for buck, it's 65nm and runs decently warm, starts out at 2Ghz but within 30 minutes I had it up to 2.8 and it looks like it has more headroom for clocking. Picked it up for under $70 bucks for a backup machine couldn't be happier with the budget processor.
