will i notice a difference in performance when upgrading from dual-core to quad-core in games esp. crysis, call of duty, and photoshop? currently i have an E6850 running at 3.8ghz

you should notice an increase in performance in any multithreaded app that supports more then 2 threads

I would think that you should in Photoshop though I'm not so sure in the others.

Crysis doesn't scale past 2 cores and 2 GPU's, CoD you're probably getting good enough FPS already and Photoshop will be faster in some cases. IMO it's not really worth it.

Like most people have said; with how fast you have the E6850 clocked, you aren't really going to notice much of a difference.

The only thing in your rig that you could possibly want to upgrade would be the 9600GT, and even that isn't a bad card.

tried both, and id say you wouldnt feel anything different in performance..esp in crysis

Crysis Warhead is supposed to be multi threaded (As it says on the box). I don't know if that implies quad core utilization, or just Dual like the first Crysis.

As of now, I don't think you would see much difference at all. Now in the future, you will benefit more from a quad core(when games utilize them) and would also last longer before you have to upgrade again.

yea guess am just gonna stick with the 6850 until my hardware upgrade in late 2010

The faster dual-core will be the better out-of-the-box solution of the two, without overclocking either processors operating frequencies of course.

The reason I decided to go Quad was video encoding. I have been doing a lot of video encoding lately and I noticed a huge difference over my C2D E6750 @ 3.8Ghz. With everything else I've noticed little to no change.

Video encoding is one thing that really takes advantage of lots of cores. But honestly, for most gaming and home applications, 4 cores isn't going to help a whole lot. For right now you're better off with a higher clocked dual core than a lower clocked quad core.

That said, if you're spending the money to upgrade you might as well go quad. I'll be doing a Core i7 upgrade sometime this year even though I don't really have anything that will take advantage of 4 cores. I mostly want to switch because of the new architecture.
