please help with cpu

Post by leenewton1 »

hi
i have run in to a problem with my cpu,the other day i bought a new e8400 core 2 duo cpu for my gaming rig,i had an old celeron d in that was coming out so i just thought it would be a simple swap,un be known to my self i didnt update the bios or motherboard before putting in my e8400.the problem i have is when i try to boot i get no video or even no pc at all,the power supply comes on with the motherboard but that is all that happens,i get no keyboard(corded) or mouse(corded) or video,i cant even get to the bios to do anything at all.i put back the old celeron d to try and reboot to update but now im getting the same problem with the old cpu,its almost like the drivers have gone or something?im guessing the motherboard isnt recognizing the new cpu but im just stuck with not been able to get to bios now with either of the cpu's.somebody said i need to do a bios flash but dont know how.this is my 3rd forum and nobody knows whats happened, any help would be hugely appreciated,im about to have to take this in to be repaired but would really like to fix it myself with out paying.

thanks lee.

Hi Lee,

Well it does sound like you need a BIOS update to get the new CPU working.

To start us off can you please tell us all of the specs of your PC (especially the motherboard).

Let's work on getting the Celeron D back up and running so you can actually flash the motherboard with a new BIOS.

When you have installed the old CPU back, have you cleared the CMOS with the little BIOS jumper thing on your mobo?

Did you remove any cables when installing the new CPU and forget to plug them back in?

Does your motherboard have a POST beeper or display, it would be good if you could hook up a speaker to see if the board is making any post error beeps that might help us work out what the problem is.

hi dan
thanks for getting back so soon!!

ok sorry i should have given you the specs so here they are-
xfx n-force 680i mobo
intel celeron d 3.2ghz
8800gt bfg oc2 video card
680 apevia iceberg power supply
4gb ocz reaper memory
vista ultimate x86 32bit

no i havent done anything with the cmos,im not sure what to do or where the jumper is?
i now have the mouse and keyboard back up and running.
yes the motherboard has a post beeper but isnt beeping, the power light is on with the motherboard but i get no beep but it wont even get to bios so not sure if thats why?
might be a good idea to clear the cmos first,do you know where the jumper is on my mobo?

thanks lee.

Well from looking at pictures of your board there is a little blue jumper on the bottom middle. That could be it, but I'd look up in your manual to see if that is it.

Else, with the power off (and cord unplugged), you can just take out the battery for 30seconds and the put it back and that will do the same thing.

There any mention in your manual about post codes and what they mean?
-- probably isn't a code, but it's worth checking out. And look up 18 while you are there.

I can't get a copy from XFX and check as they only let people who have registered those boards to download things like that :(

Drop back down to one stick of RAM, and unplug all drives connected to your mobo and see if that gets you anywhere with booting.

If you can't post, then you can't get to the point of booting from a BIOS flashing media. So no, there is no point in trying that yet.

Did you plug in the power plug right above the CPU? Should be an 8 pin plug (two rows of 4).Sounds to me like you might try that. If you don't have an 8pin plug, then you can power with a 4 pin plug - READ THE MANUAL FOR CORRECT POSITION.

Which version of the 680i board is it? I see a 680iLT and a 680SLI.

Not sure if this violates anything...

I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong.

I thought 680i didn't support 45nm processors? Thought there was a PWM change and reference 680i boards wouldn't support 45nm processors while some non-reference boards were able to support 45nm processors with a simple BIOS update. I could just be remembering wrong but I'd check this out.

The latest 680i bios update (P33.bin, BIOS Date : 9/15/2008) is supposed to Improve Core 2 Quad 1333 stability and overclocking, so using a quad on these boards isn't really a issue anymore these days.
