Just wondering what to do since I came into some Christmas funds. Would I notice any improvement? Or is it best to spend my money on something more worthwhile? Thoughts appreciated! :P

lol, well the little bit more cache can only help, and them being 45nm will surely let you overclock harder :P

I figured I'd give my old processor to a friend that is still suffering on a P4 1.6ghz (he also uses photoshop a lot. Believe me, its painfully slow)

My goal with this processor is to drop the multi and up the fsb to 1333mhz. Therefore achieving a fast bus and clock speed on stock volts. :P

Depending on the chip, you might not even have to drop the multi!

And before you mention it to your friend, make sure his board can support the CPU, as the older LGA775 boards don't support the new core2 processors (and derivatives). Would be heartbreaking to have such an upgrade and not be able to use it (unless he's prepared to get a cheap core supporting mobo).

Yea, he would need a new motherboard. He's still on Socket 478. Also, I know that there is the risk that the e5200 won't overclock worth crap, but I'll take it.

Sooo, he can't use your old CPU :(
Good luck with your E5200 :)

No, he can't use my old cpu yet. Until I talk him into buying a cheap 775 board. :)

Advice him DFI BloodIron P35-T2RL LGA 775 Intel P35; it's very good clocker. But he still needs some new parts... (DDR2 800, PCiE VGA, PSU...)

Actually, he's not a gamer. So I'll be getting him the following:

GIGABYTE GA-EG31M-S2 LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro (Should be able to overclock to what I had it at: 2.66ghz)

Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

It'll come out to around $80.

He'll just use the integrated video to run photoshop stuff, so no video card needed.

Well, it will be fine...

Yea, kinda hate to see my old processor go to someone that does no gaming at all................ :(

Seems like a waste almost. Although it would be a bigger waste sitting in a box.
