I understand for instance, Nvidia 7800gtx samples out in certain peoples hands before the actual release date. Test it out, hype it up, get us desktop users ready for the "latest and greatest". Fine.

So, Why give X-bit labs a Pentium M chip and they do a test of it on an Asus MB with the socket 478/479 adapter. After all this is a notebook chip were talking about. Most folks aren't into upgrading a notebook chip. AMD has been giving Intel a very hard time as of late along with Intel has had their share of bad press in regards to thermal issues, overly long pipelines, etc.. Is this a way for Intel to put feelers out about moving the little notebook chip into the desktop, at least for the gaming crowd. I just found this interesting and it has my curiousity up.

Apoptosis: I was in the process of adding to it when you replied, sry.

It can be yours for $780! That is a VERY expensive mobile processor.

I'm also shocked that their nearly 20 page article didn't once touch on overclocking that mobile chip! :|

i saw that... i was pretty let down with this article and chip overall. for the price, you're better off getting a used fx55 for $550 from some computer forum or ebay and overclocking. either that or save up for the new athlons coming out.... or just get a 7800gtx

I don't think so. I think it is because for the first time, the Pentium-M chip can be used without having to spend $200 on a motherboard; you can just buy the adaptor and pop it into an Asus board. It's like using the AthlonXP-M in a desktop PC, you can get a lot more performance out of it by overclocking, and the Pentium-M is the same way...it just dissipates a lot less heat.

I am a little shocked . I read that article when it was released and there was a whole page on the O/C ability of this CPU. With everthing set at stock they got 2.6 @ I believe 160fsb. Than they got to 2.82 @ 166 by increaseing cpu v by 0.1 v and they stated this was the highest stable O/C.
I just used your link and that page is indeed gone .

seems a little disappointing for $780.... to say the least

Man what do you want from this chip. At 2.26 clock for clock it was allover the higher clocked 3800.Lets be reasonable . Than there's the future of this Arch. in the form yonah Intel says 30% performance increase over dothan. Than there Merom another 20% improvement at same clock. Than in 07 there is merom 2 with CSI or ondie memory controller another 20to 30% speed improvement . This dothan is nothing but impressive.

Yopu say it was "All Over" the 3800+, which is at stock speed, i'd like to see a side by side comparison of the 2 overclocked, and a price to performance comparison as well.
The 3800+ is roughly half as much so as to it beating the 3800+, I'm less than impressed right now also. Especially coonsidering the few motherboard options available.
I think dual core is the way to go, with the 820 and X2 processors being the future.

I agree dual cores is the way to go. Yonah is going to shock everyone into reality . Its only weakness is no 64 bit tech. At this moment that doesn't matter as Amd 64 been out a long time and still no 64 bit support.
As for O/C a dothan to 2.82 and a 3800 to 2.8 .You are the one who would be surprised as the dothan performance increase's dramaticly under O/C

Price performance ratio . If I am going to O/C I would go to the cheaper model Dothan and clock it up.
M/B support as we speak this support is coming . Dual core Yonah is going to save Intels Butt.
Why do I say this . Because of dothans performance today.Intel must agree as there future chips are all being built around the dothan Tech.

2.26 = terrible for dothan... especially at $700+. terrible = understatement. more like robbery.

Your right that price is high. The new FX57 is priced at over $1000. This ia gamers CPU . With that in mind a $700 2.26 clocked to 2.82 well it it up and spit it out. thats a fact and thats bang for the buck . Now I know that FX57 will O/C a little without water say 3.GHZ that well not be enough to beat the dothan in games. 3.2GHZon water now AMD is right there with dothan . now put dothan on water go to 3ghz And AMD is out to lunch you may not like it but its real world.Keep in mind were talking gaming here.

I'm not going to get into an AMD vs Intel argument, both lines have their followerrs for whatever reason, and both companies make very good processors. I'm not following the part where you say AMD doesn't support 64 bit......seems like thats why they call them AMD-64.
As to the FX-57, it is an expensive processor, but to say you'll only see 3.0GHz on air is premature, since there are only a handful floating around, and no real articles on them until the embargo is lifted, so thats merely specualtion.
As to the Dothan, I'm still not impressed, its a mobile CPU, has limited motherboard support, and until they follow thropugh with some boards and we actually see the performance.....not hear about it, I'll continue to be skeptical.

well, i'm playing cs:s at an average of 130 fps right now on my 2.0ghz dothan. i'm quite content.

I am sorry about the amd 64 thing Is what I ment is there is no support for 64 bit apps yet you know there not wrighting programs for 64 bit tech yet. Or I should say there not released yet and the ones that are out don't show me much. As for the performance of a Dothan O/C there are a lot of reviews on the web with the Dothan clocked to 2.5 and they absolutly Kill the FX55 I mean really in gaming the dothan has know equal.
Thats why I didn't like X-Bits review they got a stable O/C of 2.82 and didn't show benchies. Or they just didn't post them for some reason. Its possiable the tester is pro AMD I don't know.Thats whats great about Legit they get inthere and really mix it up . Than they post in the forums and have great discussions. If Legit stays its course they have the oppertunity to become 1 of the top hardwarwreview sites.

I can get 160 out of my 3500+ and X850 XT PE.......numbwers are fine....but to tell you the truth, I'd be willing to bet we couldn't tell the difference if we looked at them side by side.

agreed... but i'm also running on a 6800gt... you've got a graphics card about 3 or 4 classes above mine when it comes to cs:s.
