How much longer do you think the socket 775 will stay around

I was curious on this. I see the i7 and I see how it basically dominates the highest socket 775s in some benches while sometimes it's the other way around. How much more power can they squeeze out of 775 and what is the reason they changed, and if they had a good reason for 1366, why are they making all kinds of new sockets?

:-( so the most powerful one I can possibly get is the q9650? I suppose it's good enough for a decent while

Socket 775 is still good, but there will be nothing else made in that series. But now you can pick up some used 775 stuff cheap when someone jumps on the i7 wagon. So it will help you also.

Good Day

i7 is still pretty pricey so I am guessing 775 will be around for a while for mainstream computer users - esp. since a decent C2D or C2Q is plenty fast to power most of the programs and games out there.

I don't think socket 775 is anywhere close to being dead. Sales for C2D/Q far exceed sales for i7 even till this day. Until i7 hardware adopts a maintstream price, 775 will continue to sell. I'm still on an E8400 and I don't see a good reason to upgrade to an i7 yet.

So do they plan on making the i7s now and dropping them for the i5?

SKT1336 (i7) was never meant to replace SKT775.

SKT1156 (i5) is going to be the replacement.

I would completely agree if i7 was the only option. Now with the introduction of the i5, 775 will phase out a good bit faster. Either way, I think socket 775 will remain popular for a while yet.

LGA775 may still be around but I don't see any further development towards this platform, especially when the i5 chips are released.
