Anyone want to get in on a discussion about the upcoming core i5/i7 Lynfields? Your thoughts and ideas on how it will stack up to the core i7 Bloomfields at similar speeds or OCs?

My prediction: The Intel Core i5 860 is almost like the core i7 920 as it is crazy overclockable with Dual channel DDR3....

Not that I have one or anything...

I still dont care about the i7 they promised an amazing performance yeild and although it does give kickass performance it isnt as much as they promised however my main beef with the i7 is that you need to get a lot of new hardware if you want to use it.

My only gripe is that the i5 is said to only be able to do one PCIe 2.0 x16 or two PCIe 2.0 x8.

I should also say that the core i7 920s are on sale at Microcenter by where I live for $199...

Been looking into both i5/i7 goodies lately and still not quite ready to make the jump (but getting close) . Iam wondering how i7 prices will do when i5 comes out . Trying to hold off till oct/nov/dec , hoping prices will fall even more by then .

Personally , comparing my Q6600 to my bros 920 i7 rig ; its faster but not by leaps or bounds by anymeans . Only benifit I see atm is future-proofing . What we need are better programs (and games) to take full advantage of the i7 now ; without waiting till the end of this cylce for it to happen .

I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if i7 prices drop SIGNIFICANTLY when i5 is out. Intel and their partners know that they can keep prices where they want them, but it would seem beneficial to them to drop prices a bit so they'd sell more. Here's to crossing our fingers ;)

Aren't they discontinuing the 920 and 940 so they don't have to drop prices though?

But yeah it seems that's going to happen, at least to the 940

I'd say the 920 is being discontinued because it's too good of a match for the Core i5's which can cost more

It'd be best to get in early and get an i7 rig before it's too late I think. The only positive about Core i5 is the new P55 mobos coming along with it are likely to support SATA 6GBs and USB 3.0 which my board (MSI Eclipse X58) won't support unless I buy a new one

The 920 isn't being discontinued as of now. Intel stated that they do not have plans to discontinue it for the time being. Only the 940 is being discontinued right now.

Given this price on an i7 920, http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0302727], as well as the following office pricing of the Lynnfields, http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/new ... lynnfields, I would have to be a fool to pidgeon hole myself with the 1156 socket. Even if the 1366 mobos cost more the total cost of relative systems would be fairly close (within $100 probably) and I would be able to have multiple PCIe x16 slots that work at x16 speeds, and I would have HT and the possibility to go to 6-cores if I end up getting some extra money. Hell at these prices I could even buy a spare i7 920 for a little extra security for when Intel stops making the "cheap" i7 1366 CPUs.

Given that from all indications, the Lynnfields will perform similar clock-per-clock, the 1366 platform looks like the way to go for me.
