freezing problems

Post by -mogwai »

can someone tell me why my computer sometimes just decides to freeze? sometimes, it wont even freeze... the screen will just go black. either that or the computer will restart. i've been monitoring my cpu temp and it goes no where higher than around 39C. also, i don't even have it overclocked. i brought it down to 1.5ghz (100fsb). it's really getting annoying.

That can be everything from heat, to bad drivers, to a software issue, to anything man...

beautiful.

well, actually, i noticed it happening after i installed the catalyst drivers to test out an ati card. but, then i went back to my nvidia card and used ati's uninstaller program to get rid of the ati drivers and tools and whatnot.

i'm running a virus check right now and it seems that i've contracted quite a few.

run driver cleaner to help remove any left over graphics driver files that have been installed on your PC. If this happened after a driver update then it is most likely those new drivers. Either "rollback" the install or scrub it clean and re-install the last known good drivers and you will be back to normal in no time.

As far as the restarts are concerned, I'd disable the system from doing so and see if you can get an error code to help narrow down the culprit (though it sounds like you may have more than one issue going on):

Right-click MY COMPUTER
Select PROPERTIES
Click on ADVANCED tab
Under STARTUP AND RECOVERY, click on SETTINGS
Under SYSTEM FAILURE, uncheck AUTOMATICALLY RESTART

the same thing was happening to a friend of mine and he installed the windows cd and did a repair and it fixed it. there were some corrupted files that were causing his whole joint to freeze up and restart and whatnot.

i am starting to think that my problem was virus related. i cleaned up a few of the viruses on my computer and i haven't had the problem since. we'll see what happens.

Yeah, first I'd use the Windows CD and try chkdsk /p under repair.
If that doesn't work, I'd try uninstalling drivers and reinstalling, most likely the video card driver.
I just went through a huge ordeal with my 3500 Winnie, replaced the board, the memory, reinstalled Windows..... and it ended up being a bad memory controller in the CPU....ooops.
