I am looking to upgrade my processor. I have an HP 7965 computer, with a 1.7 Ghz processor. I want a more powerful one. I have done upgrades to this computer, but I don't know about upgrading processors.
Here is a link to the motherboard specs:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... e=bph07293
It says that I have a Socket 478. Does this mean i can install any Socket 478 processor, and it'll work?
Thanks for the help.

well not really no, if you put a presscott in there i would imagine that it would burn up the board. The fastest cpu i found for your board that would be a safe known drop in is the 2.6ghz 400mhz fsb. You should look around on ebay, and forums and see if you can pick one up second hand.

a Northwood P4 should work well in that board, just so long as it's around the speed infinitevalence is talking about. Certain Northwood steppings are really good overclockers and stable as all hell. An overall good old school processor IMHO.

Hi All,
Sorry for the previous post which I deleted. Bit_Cloud here's a link that should meet the need you have.

Good find jtm, that's definitely ideal for that mobo!

I would say you could put any northwood pentium (don't use celerons 'cause that would be a downgrade) without hyper threading in there. so you should be fine up to 2.8Ghz. I used to have a similar mobo (same chipset) with a 2.53mhz northwood that was OC'd to 2.8ghz. those are really nice processors. they are fast and run cool (you can run them with stock intel cooling and even OC). I would look around on ebay or else for a used 2.53, 2.6 or 2.8 northwood (with 533FSB). that would be a decent upgrade from 1.7 especially if you could get it cheap.
you might need to update your mobo's bios to the latest but that is advisable anyway.

Any socket 478 CPu with a FSB of 400MHz will do.....
Be carefull, as there are 478 chips with 533 and 800MHz FSB's....That board only supports 400MHz...so If you got the wrong chip, the board would be underclocking it, if it would work @ all!!!

might want to see if a forum member has a cheap intel board they could sell you for cheap. I actually ran a prescott on an i845 board and nothing fried, so results may vary. Also a 6XX series CPU would be better than a 5XX CPU on that board... You should be able to find an old P4 Northwood though for cheap.

K. Thx for the help. But I have another question:
If I do buy a new mobo, will the video card, RAM, NIC, etc. be compatible with it? Is it just the processor that can only run on certain boards?

If your going for a new motherboard, you need to make sure the board runs either APG 4x or 8x (pci express is a no-go)
since your talking about a new cpu aswell, then make sure the board supports the same type of cpu and AGP 4x or 8x........
I have a p4p800Dlx motherboard sitting beside me, I could sell it but shipping to the US would be too expensive ;(
Your not by any chance in Europe? I can sell you this board.....It's a very stable/fast board and a good overclocker too

(basically I can let it go for shipping costs!)

So there's no compatibility issues? Good. And, I do live in the USA, s I guess it's a no-go. Anyone have any other suggestions?
