Intel future- Pentium M core

So, the future of Intel was not meant to be the P4, but back along the lines of the P3 family. More interesting, the M core. I can remember reading several years ago how some folks were suggesting to Intel they ditch the P4 in favour of the Pentium M in the desktop. At last, this is good. I'm looking forward to Conroe this 3rd/4th quarter. Then again, I wonder what AMD has hidden away on its wafers! :-s

AMD does not have much thats why they are not talking :) the fact of the matter is at the moment i dont think they have any real plan for their next arch. The will contiue tweaking and extending the A64, which is just a K7 with 64bits and some memory enhancements, as long as they can.

On the Intel side... there is one real problem 64bits.... i really did not want a 32bit laptop processor but their overclocking potential and power saving won me over. I will not however buy a desktop that is not 64bit. Vista, which i dont plan on using, is 64bit, most of my applications require 1gb of memory so im looking to do 2-4gb on my next computer, and linux is now nativly 64bit. I would much rather have the presision and power that 64bit offers.

So it will be interesting to see if Intel can take this efficent arch and make it true 64bit. If they do then its back to intel for me. Unless AMD can make a real counter.

Exactly, but what if AMD stops tweaking the A64? Will it come up with a great and superstrong new core or will it just crumble like 3dfx...

These two companies love to go back and forth, I guess it's just Intel's turn to carry the torch for now.

it seems like amd always waits for intel to put something out just so they can top it...

That would be nice, but i really dont think its going to happen, i think coruno is going to kick amd's ass in all things, faster, more efficent, and run cooler.

And after doing more research... i have found that Conroe does have 64bit support... never mind all my arguments are moot. AMD come up with something good or im going back to intel.

If AMD cannot deliver a serios performance improvement with AM2 and offer some idea of where they will be headed, im getting a Conroe system.

I wouldnt be suprised if AMD and Intel have some sort of contract in which they switch turns every few months-years...

I suspect Microsoft and Norton of that!
