Is it worth swapping out a Socket 478 2.0GHz Core Duo for a 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo? They're pretty pricey right now, that's why I ask. I think the T7200 was around $350. This is in my notebook, by the way.

there not backward compatible if your notebook is indeed a socket 478. Merom or C2D is 479 pins and I even believe the pins are different from that of the Yonah and Dothans

In my coverage of Merom you might recall the above picture... look at the difference in pins.

I see on Intel's website that there is a 479 and 478 pin Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo is 478 and 479 pins also. Now, would that make a flip of a difference if mine had 478/479 pins, or strictly a big fat NO, you can't slap one in?

Nate, I read your article (missed it when you posted it...) and I would hate to buy a Core 2 and it wouldn't work. That 1710 XPS is pretty much the same as my E1705, just some small differences, such as video card offerings.

I have an i945PM chipset, so according to your article, I should work. I'm running BIOS revision A01 for my system. I know there is an A02 out there, but I'd be skeptical to update to it period!

when it comes to pins, yes, yes it makes a difference. Since the motherboards processor connection bay is set to the right amount of pins for your processor, or processors on the same based pins and such, then ones of other pins will not work, cause the alignment of the pins will not match that of your board, thus not be able to fit/work properly.

Nails, looks like your good to upgrade if it is in fact a socket 479 rather than the 478 version

Check if your bios version supports C2D!

Yonah and Merom are pin2pin compatible.
But your bios might not be.

You can check your notebook manufacturer's website that ur notebook model does support C2Ds or not.

I highly doubt it would work, first you would need to have a BIOS that supports it, second, core 2 duo requires a different chipset. and finally they are incompatable sockets.

Not only wouldn't it work..it probably wouldn't be worth it anyway.

What are the differences between the T2xxx, T5xxx, and T7xxx?? Iv'e been wondering for a while now.....
