Hi-

Currently I have a motherboard with a Pentium D dual core installed. If I decided to upgrade my processor to a core 2 in the future, how would I know if the motherboard is compatible?

Thanks in advance.

if you give the motherboard specs it can be easily checked.. some are compatible and some aren't.

start>run>dxdiag, then give the system manufacturer and model.

Thank you for the reply.

Manufacturer: Dell
System Model: DM051

***Edit***

I also looked up some more specs in pc wizard. It gave me a different model number for the mainboard: 0HJ054

Older LGA775 boards do no support C2D.
Taking a wild guess I would say that your board doesn't.
Yes i know the socket is the same but still thats the way it is...

Thanks for the info, but I'm still curious as to what it would support.

How would you go about checking it. Is there some website or program?

Are you sure about that? I'm curious about the same thing, as I have the Dell E510 (which is the same as the 5150). Check out this info on the 945G Chipset from Intel's website:
  • Platforms based on the Intel® 945G Express Chipset, combined with the Intel® Coreâ„¢2 Duo processor, deliver innovative features and new benefits for both home and business.
and
  • 1066/800/533 MHz System Bus
Supports Intel® Core™2 Duo processor, Intel® Pentium® D processor, Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology and all other Intel® Pentium® processors and Intel® Celeron® processors in the LGA775 socket, with scalability for future processor innovations.

The 5150 was released before the VRM resolution change that allows for Core 2 Duo. The board contains VRM 10, VRM 11 is needed, thus won't support Core 2 Duo. Trust me I did a system upgrade for a customer on the same exact system. He told me even though I pointed out the above that he could get it to work. It didn't.
