Wise To Overclock Acer Aspire 5601? (Intel Core Duo 1.66Ghz)

Post by geokilla »

I'm thinking about overclocking my laptop to maybe 2Ghz while lowering the vcore at the same time. Heck, I'll be happy if it can even get to 1.8Ghz. My main concern is that if I'll get any conflicts with the Acer ePower Management and the built in Intel Speedstep. Since when it's not under heavy load, ePower and Speedstep would lower the vcore in order to extend the battery life.

I know how hot my CPU gets at stock speeds while running Prime for 15 min. According to CoreTemp, my max Tjunction is 100C and the highest my CPU went to was 88C in Core 0. Now if I can successfully overclock the CPU while lowering the vcore, my temps should stay the same right?

If I do overclock, it'll be done through clockgen. I'll use the Notebook Hardware Control to control my vcore and temps.

Wow your a little confused. 88C? Are you kidding? That is way way too hot. It shouldn't hit over 60C in a load situation. The TJunction Temp is that max temp before the computer shuts down. You do not want to hit that temp

Laptops can run that hot can it not? Half of the time, it's running at like 80C due to video converting. Videos get converted from RMVB to WMV format.

At idle, it's at around 65C. Now even if I don't overclock it using clockgen and assuming that lowering the vcore manually won't have any conflicts with the ePower Management and Speedstep, I can probably bring the temps to 80C when loading Prime right?

I would never attempt to overclock a laptop. Most have borderline overheating issues to begin with.

Even that Idle is way too high.

--70--/--75--75-- Hot
--65--/--70--70-- Warm
--60--/--65--65-- Safe
--25--/--30--30-- Cool

At 85 the CPU will throttle and 90 it will shut off, possibly damaging the CPU

Do your laptop fans come on at all?

I know mine idles around 50, but that is because the stupid built in fan control turns the fans off when it 'cools' it to 50 and it gets to 60 before it cools again.

Something isn't right if your laptop is that hot normally.

I think Core Temp was reading the Tjunction wrong. Notebook Hardware Control states that my Tjunction is 85C while Core Temp says it's 100C. Speedfan however can't read the Tjunction and says that both cores are currently idling at 51C, similar to what Core Temp's readings. Just to be on the safe side, I'll go with Core Temp's readings.

The fans are usually on and off. I can't hear them running a lot even when it's running under full load, and that's with temps at high 70s or low 80s!

On the bright side though, I found out that lowering the vcore greatly helped lower my temps. They went from the 80s down to 78C when stress testing Prime last night, but as soon as I closed NHC the temperatures jumped to 83C. Turns out that NHC needs to run all the time in order to get that lower vcore.

Edit: Ran Prime again, and the fan does not continuously spin. That's most likely one reason why my CPU is so hot.

I run a utility called ik8fangui on my Dell laptop. I'm not sure if it would run on your Acer, but you may be able to locate something similar. It made a world of difference in my temps as I can run the fans at slow or full speed at any time.

ITs a longshot for sure, that utility was programmed specifically for Dells.

Hey matt, pointage material?

Its called i8kfangui, do you think that stands for inspiron 8000 fan gui by any chance?
(Granted the 6400 is the laptop that has best replaced that in the Dell lineup, so that is what is mostly supports now)

originally written for the 8000, then later refined for the 6400 series, hasn't been updated since then, that was my point. IE it usually doesn't work with newer laptops

I think I'm gonna give up on my idea of overclocking the laptop. I don't want my father to find out that I'm messing around with the laptop (messing includes changing vcore and overclocking). He didn't like the idea of me overclocking my rig to begin with. I'll probably mess around with it again next weekend. I'll post the results in this thread if I can get a successful overclock while keeping the temps the same. At least he doesn't know how to use CPU-Z and related programs.

@DMB, Dicecca, and others that are interested. I'll try looking for a program that can control the fans on my Acer. First, I'll check all the Acer "bloatware (which is really useful sometimes), then I'll do some googling around. If I can find it, I'll post the link in this thread so you guys can speed up that tiny little fan in the laptop.

Time for the old thread revival.

I gave on the idea of overclocking, but since I did a clean install of Windows XP after finally deciding that all the bloatware was slowing down the laptop, I installed NHC so I can control the system voltages, CPU speed, and stuff. At the moment, I'm running Prime Blend since I'm undervolting the CPU.

To others, I couldn't find the Acer program that could control the fans. I remember reading something like that such a program didn't exist or something.
