MAy be a silly question.

Post by keithirl »

Hiya guyz this may be a stupid question but its one i need to know.

Im planning a new system build.

The graphics card im using in it is 8800gt. It supports pci-e 2.0.

I know it will work on a pci-e x16 but is there much of a performance difference by using the latest pci-e 2.0 ?

Any reccomendations on the motherboard that supports 2.0 socket 775 ? And decent headroom for OC?

Welcome

PCIe 2.0 will give you zero performance over version 1 with that card!

Are you sure? What are the advantages of 2.0 then ?

It doubles the bandwidth available on the PCIe slot.
Your GFX card doesn't come close to using the current bandwidth available for PCIe vs.1

The only time PCIe 2 will help is in some rare cases when you run SLI or Xfire.
OR when you use a GFX card that uses system ram as well as the onboard ram (only low end cards do this! It's called Hypermemory, also the "Hybrid SLI" can use it)

You GFX card has 512MB of very fast ram and will never rely on the system ram.

PCIe 2 might be usefull later on when games use extremly large textures, but this won't be until 2009+

If you want an Intel board with PCIe 2 you'll have to get an X38 or X48 chipset board, or an Nvidia 790i motherboard.

Best bang for buck is with a motherboard based on the Intel P35 chip set, an IMO ASUS makes the best ones!

Cheers mate thats cleared it all up for me perfectly. Thanks very much for you excellent reply! :)

The system im building in that case wont need pci-e 2.0.

This is what im planning to build.

Antec NeoHE 500 GB 500W Power Supply
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R GA-P35C-DS3R
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2 2GB
Antec P182 Advanced Super Mid Tower Case
Western Digital Raptor Hard Disk Drive
XFX NVIDIA PCI-E 8800GT 512MB DDR3

Any input on any adjustments I should make would be extremely helpful thanks

Swap your PSU to a Corsair 550VX and you're all set.

Not sure how much your budget can extend to but get a Corsair 520HX instead of the 550VX. I've got the 550VX with the same case and am now regretting my decision not to go modular. I routed the power cables behind the mobo tray and they're bunching up. Although I haven't really tried organizing it - had to stuff them together and close the case door since I was already late for class. It's also hard to find a place to stuff the extra cables when it's fully-loaded.

If you're not using the lower HDD cage, that's a good place to stuff excess cables.
File Server/Media Encoder/PVR PC
Antec P182 / Corsair 550VX / Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R / Core 2 Duo E7200 @ 2.53 / Wintec AMPX 2x2GB DDR2 800 / Sapphire 100233L Radeon HD 3450 / WD Caviar SE16 750GB x3 / WD Caviar GP 750GB / Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7190A x2 / XP Pro SP2

unRAID Server
Antec 300 / Corsair 520HX / Abit AB9 Pro / Celeron 430 @ 1.80 / Kingston ValueRAM 2x1GB DDR2 667 / ATI Rage XL / Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB x9 / unRAID 4.3.3

Under the powersupply itself works too 8-)

I hid quite a few there on my P180: http://forums.legitreviews.com/about664 ... ml#p100025
Granted it's not quite as clean as it would be if it was completely modular, but it works all the same.
