Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Processor Review - 45nm Wolfdale

The old 65nm Conroe dual-core processor that we have all come to know and love has been replaced by a new 45nm Wolfdale dual-core processor! Read on as Legit Reviews takes a look at the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 processor, which is the flagship 45nm dual-core processor that uses the Wolfdale core. Clocked at 3.16GHz the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 is fast right out of the box, but it overclocks like a champ and performs faster than any dual-core CPU that we have ever tested.

The Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 that we specifically looked at in this article did very well in the benchmarks and consistently beat the AMD Phenom 9600 Black Edition quad-core processor. This goes to show how well the Wolfdale core has been developed and also how bad of a position AMD is in when it comes to processors. When it came to overclocking, the 45nm Wolfdale processors do great and hitting 500MHz FSB is easily possible, which means 2GHz DDR3 memory kits can be finally released and companies like Corsair Memory have already launched such products...

what most sites do is just take an E8500 and downclock it to the other speeds... I can do that if you'd like in future articles and that way you can see what an E8200 and E8400 would perform like, but of course time is always a limitation. I'm already working on the next three reviews now ;(

Nice review. I guess this answers my question. Q6600 it is if the Penryn quads don't come out in time. Albeit, the E8000 was really close competition, it seems that quads are still better for media related tasks. A suggestion, would it be possible to test the setups using graysky's x264 benchmark? I'm particularly interested in seeing results for the Phenom since there's not very many of those.

Thank you for a great review. I have been waiting for someone to look at the E8500. Now I just need to find out when newegg will start selling these or restock the E8400's.

If you ever get the time, comparing the E8500 to the E8400 is most likely the best situation because most people like me will probably like to see if the extra $60 or so is worth the .5 multiplier.

The E8400 is exactly the same core, so all you have to do is subtract ~5.2% frequency boost that the E8500 has and you can mentally figure out what the E8400 does in all the benchmarks. If you're overclocking the E8400 is ideal as it's $60 less an the half multiplier isn't required to hit 500MHz+ FSB.
