2/22/08 talking about the stock market

Looks like we hit the bottom, looks like we are getting a bail out. Stocks on a 200 point swing. It's about time!

I don't see that holding...

Oil is still at record highs above $100 - http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080226/oil_prices.html
Dollar Falls to Record Low as Home Prices Confidence Slump - http://bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=2060 ... AIfhMPLEwc
Housing in Freefall Until Credit Loosens - http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080226/home_prices.html
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke Speaks Tomorrow - http://www.thestreet.com/story/10405096 ... hreat.html

The record high oil prices and the record low dollar versus euro news seemed to be overlooked today. The housing market news of foreclosures up 57% from Jan 07 to jan 08 along with the housing surplus also seemed to get ignored. The market went up, but the news today was bad. The all time oil high is interesting as large companies like Fedex and UPS were both up for the day (although UPS dropped after the market close). It will be interesting to see how the market reacts tomorrow to Bernanke and after people read up on all of the announcements today.

I found this a good read - http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/b ... stReadHome

We didn't hit bottom ... yet.

This is just a little ledge before the prevailing winds blow us over the cliff.

When it rains, it pours!

Just watch out for the light bolts.

Dealing with a wide variety of people on an on going basis from greatly varied income brackets. I find that the more money they have the less they seem to care how they make it, or how it affects any one person or nation. Driven by the need to feed their wealth they'll send factories to other countries but import the goods back here to be sold, pay the foreign workers pennies on the dollar, and show their bottom line to the board of directors and share holders like a badge of honor. Then curse the homeless guy trying to wash their window for change.

Go figure.

I think once the fed cuts rates again we are off to the races. If I had extra cash I would be buying the dips. Just my view. I hope everybody makes money in this difficult market. I know I'm not. I'm not giving up.

I agree with what Meth says here...a time will come when money is worthless and those people will regret the bad choices they made.

i wouldnt be betting on the bottom... we are in a very volatile market. an upswing tomorrow could result in a bigger downswing the next day. there are so many factors/indicators that people are watching very closely to see who the economy is doing - the housing market a major one.

Interest rates are not going to be the magic wand that saves the market, there are way too many factors. jsut making the money cheaper for the banks doesnt mean people will begin being able to pay their mortgages and companies will instantly start hiring.

I see it better/safer to wait for the turnaround then go in (yes, maybe loss a little possible return) but thats better than aiming for the bottom and continue to miss...

I don't really agree with their policies, but I've had a lot of luck with Wal Mart stock, sure it's gone down the last few days, like 1.10+ last time I checked, but what I have has split so many times it'd have to drop to about 5 dollars (from 50 approx) before it would even approach a lose money state. Traditionally it goes to about 54 bucks and I get a split notice from my investment guy. About 7 splits so far over the years.

Portfolios aren't about reacting to trends, their long term. I wouldn't sell short, when I'm worried about down trends and stagflation, I call my guy (who used to be a mortician, that might not be a good sign) and diversify a little. If your heavily invested and stressed pull out and invest in a nice short term money market account at your local bank, lower interest rate than a smart investor, but it's safe.

I'm in it for the long haul. All my extra cash goes into the market. If not, I would be folding like Darkstar :supz:
