Just put on zalman 9700. At stock clock my temps are 66c. Fan speed is at 2000rpm. Do I need to reseat cooler? All cores running 100% SMP client. Or can I overclock from 2.67 to 3.4.? Core temp reads 66,63,65,65.

Stock clocks on my Q6700 are 52,49,52,52 with the stock Intel cooler. With SMP F@H running of course :)

Do you have the thermal grase on correctly, not too thick? I would shut the computer down, let it cool, then wiggle the hsf around a bit to make sure the grease got spread around good, then restart. Might want to let it run a good hour, then shut down and let it cool again, then restart - do that a couple times to cycle the grease.

Temps just seem awful high if you are not overclocking.

I reseated cooler again and put on new thermal paste. Temps are the same. My t-juntion is 100C. What is yours? My room temp is 24C.

The red arrow represents the yellow arrow found on the actual CPU. So basically that side is the bottom right in a normal motherboard.

This is how you should be applying the paste. If you are using AS5, then you need to put your cooler square on the cpu and rotate it a few degrees clockwise, then back to the starting position. Only do this once.

Are you sure that the heatsink is staying square over the CPU as you are clipping in the bracket. Also is the plastic bit of the bracket as secure as possible so that it can apply the needed pressure to give best cooling.

Dan

PS. More reason to try and stay under 60oC; intel lists the max temp to be 65oC: http://processorfinder.intel.com/detail ... pec=SL9UL#
(It will work above this, but it will be out of spec)

Damn, I meant to add that;

What is airflow like in your case? If there is little or no through airflow then it will be the cause of the high temperature. Are there any/many wires blocking airflow into the heatsink or out of the case?

Do you have fans in the top two holders? And are they set to blow air out if you do?

I presume that you had done all that in my previous post correctly then.

I do have 2 fans on top of case. Maybe it's my video card. XFX 7950 passive cooled. I am running out of fixes. Maybe take it to the shop?

Well the only way to know if it is the case is to run the mobo outside of the case, or maybe just with the side off.

Try something counter-intuitive and have your top fans blowing air in to the case and towards the CPU. A reviewer of your case said they found the best temps that way.

The 7950GT could be contributing to it, but it only uses 50/60w of power so won't be as much of a furnace as the current gen cards are. Drop a fan blowing across it to keep those temps down and see if there is a difference.

I just o.c. and have been running SMP client for about an hour. Core temp reads 63C. Increased my muliplier from 10 to 13. Went from 2.67 to 3.47. My temps did not even go up. I think my problem is my room temp. No way am I going to turn on the AC. It's to nice of a day in CA. Thanks for all your help and will keep you posted if I fry my chip. Intel desktop utilites are all within spec. All green and no red.

I just came across this review of the qx6700, done by no other than Legit Reviews! http://www.legitreviews.com/article/412/18/ My 63C at full load looks to me like a winner.
