Re: posting but not loading OS
sorry im trying to understand what you mean, like unplug/uninstall everything except the CPU and motherboard attached to the PSU?
if anyone can, i'm on AIM RIGHT NOW. just click the AIM logo around my avatar. it'd be way faster than forum-ing this. (AIM is free and you can just use http://www.meebo.com to log into a free aim account without installing AIM on your computer)

Yeah that's what I meant, you should also take the mobo out of the case just to be on the completely eliminating everything side of things.

Re: posting but not loading OS
gotcha, Alathald suggested one step further, putting all that on top of styrofoam as a precaution.
now to just get these dang motherboard screws out x.x
@ Dan, Martini, and Alathald: i'm pretty sure i $&%@ed this board too... same problems, just a replaced board. lesson learned: test everything OUT of the case first. oh, and i STILL can't find those standoffs. i have 3 in the little replacement screws bag but i didnt have a full set of 9 to begin with! i gotta call up antec and ask for some i guess. is there any way of testing the motherboard itself to see if i did in fact short it into oblivion?

Re: posting but not loading OS
yeah, it'll quick format the HD to NTFS and then as soon as it starts copying the files over for the XP install, it reboots.
used the UBCD to test the HD quick AND full tests, both came up with zero errors.
i'm reasonably sure that since i didnt have those standoffs that the board's fried. again.
i have no clue if ASUS will replace this board like it did the other.
i'd like to figure out if in fact the board is bad now.
EDIT: i've had it. i ordered a cheapo replacement board with onboard graphics as well as a spare PSU. when they get here i'm going to go out and get a far more accurate multimeter too. my room's been in shambles with component boxes for the last 2 months. i'm over this crap and if i have to deal with a non-overclocked PC for a while then so be it, i just want my PC back](./images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif)

Re: posting but not loading OS
I BELIEVE I HAVE THE PROBLEM NAILED!
see THIS THREAD first
so i assembled the Gigabyte board with 1Gb of my Mushkin DDR2 800 and all other listed stuffs in my signature MINUS the GPU.
i chose this board with on-board graphics because i wanted to be sure that my GPU was out of the equation:
i.e. that if it worked with OR without it, there wasn't anything wrong with the 7800GT
so i boot up, POST, load the XP disk and quick format the HD piece of cake.
reboot and BSOD when we try to install XP. same exact kind of BSOD so i'm certain its not a motherboard problem.
i then powered down and swapped the other Mushkin stick in. same BSOD.
i've tested them for 3+ hours with MemTest but, to me, all signs are pointing at them.
note that they have NOT been overclocked. i was just dipping into the world of OC when i built the computer, and i still want to hone my overclocking experience with my CPU and GPU before i messed with the good stuff
so i'm looking around for someone around here with a DDR2 based board so i can see if their PC BSOD's with my ram in it, going to call up Mushkin, and am open to any and all suggestions from the board.
and at least i got this nice little Gigabyte board in the end for $55. even has some meager OC options.
now to just get my main motherboard rig up again

i think you should just rma the ram. if the replacement sticks dont work either, then you can take them out of the equation. plus you get new ram. you have nothing to lose

Re: posting but not loading OS
yep i ordered a stick of DDR2 667 (SuperTalent) off the egg and i'm a big tweaked that i ordered it yesterday and they still haven't processed the order.
guess that $3 "rush my order" thing is really worth it...
if i get this stick and it works, i know for certain what the issue is.
if not, then i'll still RMA the mushkin to be safe.
: cries : i just want my baby back

Re: posting but not loading OS
no go on that ram. when i find some time i'm going to try some different hardware configurations to see if i can get any of the possible combos to work.
it cant be the GPU, RAM, or motherboard since i've gotten the same problem/BSOD trying to install XP with the original setup and the secondary motherboard/ram combo.
CPU and harddrive have both TESTED good, but i'm skeptical.
when i can i'll use my new multimeter and test the two PSUs to see if either of them could be suspect.
other than that i've got an IDE DVD-rom that was running Bioshock when the whole deal kaputted. and my XP disk wont install properly off of it...
i'm about ready to just give up if i dont find a combination of my parts that breathes.

Re: posting but not loading OS
another update:
took the damn thing into a local PC shop that seemed to be a reputable one. apparently:
1. my RMA-ed board hadn't had it's BIOS updated to support my native FSB of 1333
2. my cpu is @#$%ed anyhow.
so now, even though it seemed to test fine on the UBCD test, my E6750 is fried, i'm out $40 for a diagnostic and $150 for labor and each additional test they ran (i'm going to talk to them about this, thats way too high for what i expected) AND i've gotta find a cheap replacement CPU til i can save up for a new one... X.X

i dont get it either!!!!! that thing was running at 3.2Ghz at about 46C load... wtf???
apparently Bioshock killed my cpu. i'm pissed beyond belief. 3 months of BS and my most expensive piece of equipment was to blame. i NEVER did anything stupid to that chip, and i cant afford a damn replacement other than one of those $50 celeron POS cpus.

The CPU not under RMA-able warantee still?
That really does suck. Especially about the extra charges on top of the diagnostics. Were you made aware that there would be the surcharges? Either they told you or there was some smallprint?
